Purpose

Promote the brand, activities, scholarship, accomplishments, and people of the Moody College of Communication using your outstanding journalistic and storytelling skills, strong digital and proactive media relations experience, and creativity.

Essential Functions

Work closely with the director of marketing and communication to plan, research, produce, edit, and/or disseminate compelling written journalism and content marketing that supports Moody College goals of elevating the brand, engaging key audiences, attracting talent, and garnering support for the college. Plan and implement weekly content creation and major projects aligned with Moody College communications strategy and editorial calendar. Maintain timely schedules for production of content. Contribute story ideas, interview subjects, and create written content for multiple channels, including website, social media, e-newsletters, reports, speeches, and scripts for videos. Work with other writers, photographers, videographers, designers, media relations specialists, and marketers, identifying editorial opportunities of interest, such as creative student experiences and work product, interesting faculty research findings and newsworthy events and stories. Write press releases and media advisories, identify and cultivate media contacts, pitch key stories and respond to media inquiries. Act as copyeditor and quality assurance for selected written content produced by others in the college. Handle confidential and sensitive communications with discretion. Perform related duties as assigned. May coordinate special projects.

Required qualifications

Bachelor's degree with major coursework in public relations, journalism, communications, marketing and/or related fields. Five years of professional experience in journalistic writing and editing with a minimum of two years of multimedia or digital content creation experience. Strong team player who takes a creative approach to brand storytelling and ability to make sound editorial judgments based on knowledge of readers' preferences, trending topics and good writing principles. Keen attention to detail and stellar organizational skills. Skilled at disseminating content in appropriate channels for optimum exposure and engagement with key audiences such as news, web, social media, email, and print. Experience working with print, TV and digital news reporters. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other communications tools. Knowledge of AP Style and PR and/or marketing best practices. Preferred Qualifications

Moody College of Communication graduate. Familiarity with and passion for higher education and/or The University of Texas at Austin. More than five years experience as senior-level writer, editor and/or reporter for a news company, or as a public relations professional working closely with the media, or in educational or corporate communications capacity. Experience planning or creating full range of story-telling methods including written, and multimedia content such as video, photography, infographics. Successful experience as a professional interviewer, able to craft questions and conduct conversations in such a way as to elicit compelling responses and building trust with interview subject.Preparation and maintenance of media lists and experience using media relations distribution tools such as Cision, Meltwater and/or EurekAlert. Experience with media and brand tracking systems and services such as Radian6 and Critical Mention.
