This position is located at McDonald Observatory in the Fort Davis Mountains--16 miles from Fort Davis, Texas and 440 miles from the University of Texas at Austin's main campus. The work schedule for this position varies based on the Visitors Center's business needs and includes split shift work, weekends, and evenings.

Assists in the supervision of the StarDate Cafe's food services operation at the McDonald Observatory. Prepares and delivers food for employees and customers. Plans meals, manages stock, keeps accurate records, cleans the Cafe, and cashiers. Participates in special events. May work independently during work schedule.

Essential Functions

Provides excellent customer service, receives orders, prepares food, and closes out the sales in a timely and efficient manner. Performance is measured by the satisfaction of customers including the taste, appearance, and serving size of food. Prepares food for catering events while ensuring a high quality of standards. May participate in special events when needed. Performs routine cleaning of the equipment, kitchen, and dining areas to ensure a clean and safe working environment. Informs supervisor when the stock and supplies are low. Orders goods as instructed by supervisor, and receives and stocks merchandise on a regular basis. Follows the University's and the Visitor Center's cash handling procedures to ensure that the cash drawer and cash reports are handled according to policy. Trains part-time employees in the general operation of the cafe, menu preparation, clean-up, and stocking of merchandise. Supervises casual employees, in the absence of the Supervisor.

Performs other related duties as required.

Required qualifications

High school graduation or GED. One year of experience as supervisor of a food service unit. Use of standard and special equipment used by the food service unit and the University's Transition to Management Certificate (or equivalent). Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

More than the required qualifications. Experience in restaurant management. Experience using Point of Sale (POS) systems. Experience using Excel or other spreadsheet software. Ability to communicate effectively with employee's and guest. Good planning and organizational skills.
