Purpose

Serve as the Head of Special Collections and Senior Archivist for the Benson Latin American Collection, providing senior leadership for and participating in processing, preserving, and making accessible the Benson's rare book and manuscript collections

Essential Functions

Oversee Benson special collections facilities, security, and preservation of rare print materials, archival collections, objects, and ephemera. Manage staff in processing archival collections, including accessioning, arrangement, description, and preservation of collections in a variety of formats. Process archival collections including arrangement, description, and preservationp; create EAD finding aids and MARC bibliographic records for the collections. Maintain appropriate documentation on acquisition, accession, appraisal, and rights management. As a member of the Collection Development Team, serve in an advisory capacity for special collections acquisitions. In collaboration with the Head of Digital Initiatives/Digital Initiatives unit, coordinate on-site digitization of Benson materials and the submission of materials for digitization by UT Libraries Digital Stewardship unit. Manage Benson preservation/supplies budget. Coordinate with UT Libraries conservator for preservation freezing of archives and other pest management and conservation needs. Oversee exhibition loans to external institutions. Work directly with donors. Provide leadership for public service in special collections, and provide reference service during reading room hours. Provide reference services for Benson special collections to faculty, students and other researchers in person and online. Lead instruction sessions and tours in support of teaching and learning at the university, and for special visitors. Provide outreach and scholarly presentations to the public, professional organizations and conferences, and student groups. In collaboration with the Benson Leadership Team, determine Benson exhibition content and priorities. Coordinate exhibitions of Benson special collections materials. Manage exhibition curator budget and supplies. Facilitate the preparation and mounting of exhibitions in Benson public spaces. Work with LLILAS Benson communications team to develop printed materials for exhibitions and related events. Supervise Benson Special Collections professional and student staff. Conduct annual performance appraisals of special collections staff. Mentor students from LLILAS Benson and numerous UT Austin colleges and schools.

Required qualifications

Master's degree in Library/Information Sciences from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent degree. Proven successful supervisory experience. Works in a collaborative, flexible manner. At least 3 years professional experience in an archive or manuscript repository with processing archival collections, Encoded Archival Description, and related metadata cataloging practice. Familiarity with both analog and digital preservation. Knowledge of and experience with digitization standards and processes. Coursework or training in archival management and theory and knowledge of archival preservation best practices. Professional working proficiency in Spanish and/or Portuguese. Demonstrated recent exemplary work record. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, using tact, diplomacy, and discretion at all times including ability to communicate with diverse populations. Ability to organize short- and long-term priorities and projects and work with multiple deadlines. Experience dealing with confidential and sensitive information. Ability to interact in a professional manner with faculty, staff, students, researchers, donors and the public. Availability for international travel. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

More than three years professional experience working in an archive or manuscript repository with processing archival collections. Certification by the Academy of Certified Archivists. Demonstrated knowledge of Latin America, U.S. Latina/o Studies, and/or the Black Diaspora. Experience working in an academic research library, scholarly special collection, or large research organization. Experience curating exhibitions. Experience working with international populations. Experience providing library public service. Experience with and commitment to digital initiatives. Experience with curation and preservation of rare books.
