Purpose

Develop algorithm, hardware, and software implementations for the collection and processing of measurement data relating to GNSS/GPS, survey, geodesy, and astronomy.

Essential Functions

Contribute to the systems designs, software implementations, and collection methods for specialized geodetic survey applications, employing expertise in physics, gravity, optics, astronomy, GNSS systems, terrestrial survey instrumentation, and estimation theory. Implement software algorithms in C++ and Python in a collaborative environment. Work closely with team members to define interfaces between program components. Document implementations thoroughly and clearly. Define, implement, and execute test cases for program functions. Participate in project reviews and technical interface meetings to present designs and test results to sponsors and other external organizations. Publish work in scientific journals and present work at conferences. Provide guidance and assistance to junior full time employees and student employees. Document progress and completion of work. Provide technical assistance to users. Document and address bug reports. Further develop knowledge of geodesy, geodetic survey principles, astronomy, estimation theory, C++ and Python, and software development principles.

Required qualifications

PhD in geodesy, geophysics, engineering, physics, earth science, or related field. Experience developing software in C++ or Python for scientific applications. One or more years experience developing geodetic instrument designs, methods of geodetic data collection, and data reduction processes. Demonstrated record of authoring peer-reviewed scientific publications. Demonstrated record of presenting scientific content to technical and non-technical audiences. US Citizen: Applicant selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information at the level appropriate to the project requirements of the position. Evidence of skills in the following areas: working with new technologies, being highly organized, planning and coordinating multiple tasks, effective time management, attention to detail, effective problem solving skills, using excellent judgment, working independently with sensitive and confidential information, maintaining a professional demeanor, working as a team member without daily supervision, effectively communicating with diverse groups of clients, and working under pressure.

Preferred Qualifications

PhD in geodesy or geophysics. Proficiency using terrestrial survey instrumentation. Experience using GNSS hardware and techniques for precise geo-positioning. Experience developing on Linux and Windows platforms. Experience with terminal-based environments including bash. Experience with software configuration management processes and tools including Git and GitHub/GitLab. Proficiency with LaTeX. Cumulative GPA of 3.0.

Working conditions
