Purpose

The Director of Donor Programs and Stewardship provides leadership and implementation of strategies focused on donor recognition and retention; develops and implements consistent protocols for acknowledging, recognizing, celebrating and communicating with donors the importance and impact of their gifts.

Essential Functions

Plan and collaborate in leadership of the team on programs focused on donor recognition and retention through giving societies. Develop strategies for new and existing giving societies in collaboration with key stakeholders. Coordinate efforts with other areas of development to ensure a comprehensive donor recognition program and consistent donor experience. Create, review, edit, and or execute donor communications, reports, and videos with support from the communications team. Plan and collaborate in leadership of the team developing programs targeting first-time, reacquired, consecutive giving, and other key donor populations to increase retention. Develop strategies for retention of key donor populations in collaboration with respective staff in Annual Giving. Coordinate efforts with other areas of development to ensure a comprehensive donor retention program and consistent donor experience. Lead the Donor Programs and Stewardship team. Mange direct reports, meeting regularly as a team to ensure the successful completion of both departmental and individual business plans. Develop employees by looking for opportunities for them to exercise strengths and grow their experiences. Foster a culture of teamwork, which mirrors organization values and places equal importance on results and relationships. Ensure that donor relations communications respond to emerging fundraising goals and objectives and that the value of stewardship is inculcated at every level of the development operation thus strengthening the university's relationship with its donors and ensuring their continued support. Serve as a campus resource, expert and administrator for all aspects of donor relations, including but not limited to: acknowledgment, recognition, special reporting, retention. Provide insight and expertise on how to increase the quality and effectiveness of recognition programs by keeping informed of latest ideas, developments and trends in donor relations strategies through attendance at professional conferences and by collaborating with a network of professional colleagues and resources. Research and resolve internal and external questions as they relate to donor programs. Ensure that donor recognition activities and other stewardship initiatives are planned and executed efficiently and are in compliance with university, foundation and federal regulations. Perform or assist with donor relations processes, events, communications, and activities as requested. Collaborate with Executive Director of Operations in departmental strategic planning. Identify methods for streamlining and or enhancing efforts, particularly as they relate to donor recognition and retention. Additional duties as assigned to assist with other donor relations projects.

Required qualifications

Bachelor's Degree. Demonstrated understanding of the importance of donor relations and stewardship to a successful fundraising program. Five plus years work experience in higher education donor relations and stewardship or related field(s). Demonstrated ability to determine, request and utilize data in strategy and execution of projects. Proven ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects. Proven track record of success in implementing change. Ability to complete projects on time/ budget, and report on status. Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills. Strong analytical and decision-making skills. Solid presentation skills. Previous management of a team. Solid computer skills with experience using word processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation software. Ability to interact with donors and senior-level managers and administrators. Serve as a collegial and collaborative member of a dynamic, fast-paced team. Ability to establish measurable goals and objectives and develop and implement strategies for success as well as lead, motivate, set objectives and manage performance of staff required. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
