Additional Information

Purpose

To instruct students about projection engineering and installation practices and equipment for classes and College of Fine Arts productions. Manages the technical operation of and events in the B. Iden Payne Theatre.

Essential Functions

Supervise Integrated Media Shop: Coordinate with all MFA Designers video and projection needs for Theater and Dance productions and assigned Butler Opera Center productions. Coordinate IM production requirements with College of Fine Arts production staff and IM faculty. This includes requirements driven by students' designs as well as long-term support infrastructure for IM. Supervise IM installation and strike for Theatre and Dance and assigned Butler Opera Center productions in collaboration with School of Design and Creative Technologies A/V Manager. Supervise and coordinate installation of IM and lighting equipment in the PLAI lab space. Assist in contracts to schedule equipment, design video systems, repair/maintain equipment, and manage warranties for off-site repairs. Event Management and space supervision: Manage and plan all events produced by the School of Design and Creative Technologies in the Payne Theatre. Coordinate all production needs of PLAI productions and Events. Collaborate with Academic Production Manager and other Fine Arts staff to plan and execute Theatre and Dance season productions in the Payne. Collaborate with Theatre and Dance staff to plan and execute other events for the Department of Theatre and Dance in the Payne. Collaborate with Theatre and Dance Associate Technical Director to assure safety of all rigging including motorized and counterweight systems in the Payne Theatre. Employee supervision and purchasing: Supervise School of Design and Creative Technologies A/V Technician and student employees. Coordinate all production purchases with the Academic Production Manager. Purchase and track budgets/expenses. Instruction: Instruct students as part of production labs. Mentor student employees, student designers, lab class students. Summer: Provide technical support for classes, lectures, and performances to the summer American Ballet Theatre intensive in the Payne Theatre and summer School of Design and Creative Technologies classes.

Required qualifications

Bachelor's degree in technical theatre from a performing arts program at an accredited college with a concentration in video, media, and/or projections and five years of professional experience in media projections OR commensurate experience specializing in projections and lighting. Experience in event management. Supervisory experience. Experience in realizing and implementing media content (video, motion graphics) in theatrical productions. Working knowledge of theatrical lighting systems, lighting instruments, video projectors, projections software, control, audio systems, and theatrical rigging. Strong collaboration and communication skills. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

An MFA degree in technical theatre from a performing arts program at an accredited college with a concentration in video, media, and projections. Management experience in hanging light plots, installing PA systems, focusing lighting instruments, networking and programming lighting consoles. Knowledge of current practices and procedures in professional performing arts environments. An understanding of VectorWorks, QLab, media servers such as Disguise and Watchout and other projection software/hardware on both Mac OS X and PC systems.
