The University of Texas at Austin

Frequently Asked Questions

What information is shared on this page?

The Texas Legislature's House Bill 2504 requires that Course Instructor Survey (CIS) information be made available to the public within three clicks of the University of Texas at Austin homepage. This site provides two years of recognized CIS results for instructors in order to provide the most current information and match the available curriculum vitae and syllabi information.

Why can't I find all documents for a single instructor with one search?

CIS information is organized by course and semester, while the curriculum vitae and syllabi are organized by instructor.

When will the CIS results be available for viewing?

CIS results are available publicly two weeks after a semester ends and grades have been posted. Because instructor curriculum vitae and syllabi are available prior to the start of the semester, the CIS results will normally be one full semester behind.

How are averages for the organization, college, and university calculated?

Weighted averages, accounting for class size, are calculated for the organization, college, and university averages.

What data are included in the averages?

Only officially recognized course groupings are included in the organization, college, and university average calculations. These calculations include both undergraduate and graduate courses.

What constitutes recognized CIS records and results?

Recognized CIS information conforms to Student Information System (SIS) and Institutional Reporting, Research, and Information Systems (IRRIS) data in the aspects of: Instructor of record; unique numbers and groupings of unique numbers; which courses are organized and which are Individual Instruction; and class enrollments.

Who/What is the official source of course and instructor information?

Course and instructor information is based on official information sent to the CIS system from Institutional Reporting, Research, and Information Systems (IRRIS).
