Report for 06/07/2006

CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Monday, 6-05-06 and Wednesday, 06-07-06. BENEDICT HALL, #7 South Mall Criminal Trespass: A non-UT subject approached a UT student and sat beside her on a bench located on the 2nd floor. The subject began asking the female student personal questions, such as if she were married, her sign, if she would braid his hair, and if she was of legal age. The student, being polite, answered his questions. The subject then asked her if she wanted to have sex and stated he had protection. The student became offended and left the area to contact the UT police. Officers located the subject and issued him a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on: 6-05-06 at 12:56 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Each of us understand the concept of a red flag and a yellow caution light, these are visual warnings. Each of us has an internal warning as well. The inner-voice, the gut feeling, and the hairs rising on the back of your neck warn us that something may not be right. Many listen to these warning and take what ever action is needed at the time, while others tend to ignore the warning signs. When you find yourself in a similar position weigh your options. The best option in any type of confrontation is to simply leave. COLLEGE OF PETROLEUM ENGINEERING, 200 East Dean Keeton Street Burglary: A UT student discovered coins scattered over the floor inside a second floor student group office. The student searched further and discovered the group's money safe had been removed from a locked desk drawer and the cash box was pried open. Loss value: Unknown at this time. Occurred between 6-01-06, at 10:00 AM and 6-05-06, at 4:50 PM. COLLEGE OF PETROLEUM ENGINEERING, 200 East Dean Keeton Street Criminal Trespass: A non-UT subject was discovered camping inside the southeast stairwell. During the investigation, the officer issued the subject a written criminal trespass warning and escorted him from the building. Occurred on: 6-07-06 at 5:20 AM. GEOLOGY BUILDING: #10 East Mall Suspicious Person: A UT faculty member observed an unknown subject looking into various classrooms and labs located on the 5th floor. After consulting with another faculty member and discussing previous thefts, the UT police were notified of incident. Occurred on: 6-05-06 at 3:29 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: How quick will the response from the police department be? This is a question everyone asks when concerned about criminal activity, or when there is a crime in progress. How quick will the general public be when notifying the police department about suspicious activity that may be a precursor to criminal activity? This question many police departments can not answer. Quick notification, leads to a faster response from the police department, which in turn prevents a suspect from being able to walk away after committing a crime. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A blue backpack containing, $362.00 in cash, two credit cards, Samsung cellular telephone, and a brown Fossil wallet was stolen from the 3rd floor basketball courts. The former owner noticed that his property was missing at 7:00 PM while he was playing a basketball game. He waited until the game was over to start looking for his missing property. After searching the area he contacted the UT police department. Loss value: $452.00. Occurred on 6-06-06, between 6:15 PM and 7:00 PM. MONCRIEF NEUHAUS, 2015 San Jacinto Blvd Criminal Trespass: A non-UT subject entered into Moncrief looking for the locker rooms so that he could shower. When he was told to leave the building the subject then asked the staff member for a plate of food. Once again he was told to leave the building. Within just a short time frame, the staff member once again saw the same subject enter into the building. Once again the staff member escorted the subject out of the building. The subject sat down outside the main doors and went to sleep. During the investigation, officers discovered that the subject had received two prior written criminal trespass warning earlier in the day. Occurred on: 6-05-06 at 5:50 PM.
