CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Thursday, 06-15-06 and Friday, 06-16-06. 200 W 6th ST W, Austin, TX Driving While Intoxicated: A green Saturn was observed traveling the wrong way on a one way street into head on traffic. The other traffic had to brake and drive around him to avoid a collision. When the officer stopped and approached the vehicle, he detected an odor of an alcoholic beverage on the driver’s person. The officer also observed that the driver’s eyes were watery and bloodshot. During one of the standard field tests, the driver stated that he believed the test to be difficult and that he could not “do it sober.” After failing several standard field tests, it was determined that the driver was operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. Occurred on: 06-16-2006 at 2:30 AM. 2000 San Jacinto ST, Austin, TX Driving While Intoxicated: A speeding silver Hyundai disregarded a stop sign at San Jacinto and 21st St. The vehicle immediately parked into a parking space; however, he pulled too far in and scrapped the front bumper. When the officer stopped and approached the vehicle, he detected an odor of an alcoholic beverage on the driver’s person. The officer also observed that the driver’s eyes were watery and glassy. The driver’s speech was significantly impaired. After failing several standard field tests, it was determined that the driver was operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. Occurred on: 06-16-2006 at 2:51 AM. 1600 Rio Grande ST, Austin, TX Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was observed staggering and swaying down the side walk on 1400 Nueces. The subject crossed the street, unzipped his pants and began to urinate, thereby exposing his genitals to passing cars. The subject saw the patrol vehicle and began to run. After a short chase, the subject threw his hands in the air and gave up. The subject’s pants were unzipped and wet. The subject was determined to be intoxicated to the point he was a danger to himself. The subject also had 2 outstanding arrest warrants. Occurred on: 06-16-2006 at 3:36 AM. 702 Colorado ST, Austin, TX Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was found sleeping in the Colorado Building Garage. The subject stated he had just come from 6th ST, felt “too intoxicated to drive,” and accidentally fell asleep. The subject received a written criminal trespass warning and a taxi was called to take him home. Occurred on: 06-16-2006 at 4:19 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 11 alarm calls, 1 key assist, and 4 unsecured door reports between 06-15-06 and 06-16-06. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license.
