CRIME PREVENTION TIP OF THE DAY: As we have read in today's issue of the Campus Watch, the bike thieves are back, and it seems in full force. As we can see, the majority of the stolen bicycles were secured with a simple self-locking cable. It is unfortunate these cable locks do not provide more theft prevention and security. But even using a U-shaped lock does not guarantee that a theif will not steal that bicycle. A U-shaped lock that incorporates a standard flat key, is the minimum recommendation to secure your bicycle anywhere within the City of Austin. For maximum protection of your bicycle, look at utilizing a two-lock locking system. A two lock locking stem incorporates a U-shaped lock, with a flat key, and a thick self-locking cable. This will require the thief too carry two different tools in order to defeat the locking systems. Similar to the same type of system employed with the attempted bicycle theft on Inner Campus Dr. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 16 alarm calls, 4 key assists, 2 medical emergency calls, 3 lighting surveys, and 9 unsecured door reports between 06-26-06 and 06-28-06. Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime. Your call may help solve or prevent a crime. Campus Watch comments should be directed to Officer Darrell Halstead at 512-232-9634 or Darrell.halstead@austin.utexas.edu . Prepared by DWH
