CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Thursday, 06-29-06 and Friday, 06-30-06. 2300 Block San Jacinto Prohibited Weapon-Unlawful Possession of Firearm: A black truck, traveling southbound, disregarded a stop sign. The vehicle was traveling 30 mph in a 15 mph zone. The officer initiated the traffic stop and the vehicle finally pulled over in the 1800 block of San Jacinto. The backup officer observed a weapon on the right side of the driver’s seat. Upon further investigation, the weapon was determined to be altered to a state that made it a prohibited weapon. The driver, a non-UT subject, was driving her brother’s vehicle and stated the weapon belonged to him. The non-UT subject was given a field release citation for disregarding a stop sign. The prohibited weapon was seized. Further law enforcement action is pending. Occurred on: 06/30/06, at 2:00 AM. 100 West 24th Street Driving Under The Influence of Alcohol by a Minor & 8 counts of Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A grey 1999 Tahoe was observed driving over marked spaces on the west curb line. The Tahoe then stopped in the middle of the road. The Tahoe started up again and stopped at the intersection in the straight only lane. The Tahoe turned right and failed to use a turn signal. The officer detected a strong odor of alcohol and observed that the driver, a UT student, had glassy and bloodshot eyes. After the officer administered the standardized field sobriety tests to the driver, it was determined that the UT student was driving under the influence of alcohol. He was issued a field release citation and his driver’s license was confiscated. A friend was called to the scene to take control of his vehicle. 8 of the 9 passengers (UT students) received referrals to The Dean of Students Office for consumption of alcohol by a minor. Occurred on: 06/30/06, at 2:50 AM. 2101 Speedway-Gregory Gym Theft: A gym bag and all contents were stolen. The bag contained a social security card, a driver’s license, several credit cards, and a cell phone. The gym bag had been left unsecured on the stands of a basketball court located on the 2nd floor. Loss value: $125.00. Occurred on: 06/29/06, between 4:30-8:15 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Do not carry your social security card in your wallet or billfold. Leave it in a secure and safe place. 105 24th Street-Welch Hall Theft: An Apple computer was stolen from an unsecured office. A UT faculty member stepped away from his desk for 5 minutes to make copies and when he returned his computer and charger were gone. Loss Value: $1800. Occurred on: 06/28/06, between 5:45-5:50 PM. 2500 University-Blanton Quad Theft: A blue mountain bicycle was stolen from a bike rack. The UT student’s half inch cable lock was on the ground, where he had secured his bicycle. Loss value: $150. Occurred on: 06/28/06, between 4:30-6:30 PM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 8 alarm calls, 1 accidental damage report, 2 collisions, 1 disturbance call, 2 medical emergency calls, and 2 unsecured door reports between 06-29-06 and 06-30-06. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license.
