Report for 07/03/2006

CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 06-30-06 and Monday, 07-03-06. FRANK ERWIN CENTER, 1701 Red River Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was observed sitting on the southwest steps swaying back and forth. The subject had a moderate odor of alcohol on his breath but was not intoxicated. The subject stated he felt ill and left the event to get some fresh air. During the investigation, the officer discovered the subject had 5 outstanding outside agency warrants. Occurred on: 6-30-06, at 9:50 PM. PERRY-CASTENADA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Suspicious Person: A UT student reported an unidentified subject approached her claiming to have found a wallet and wanting to know where to turn it in. The student directed the subject to the UTPD office. The subject then told the student that he did not have enough gas to drive to the police station. The student recognized the scam and left the area as she called the UT police on her cellular telephone. The unidentified subject left the area prior to the arrival of the police officer. He is described as: white male with brown hair. He was last seen wearing a blue shirt, brown shorts and sandals. Occurred on: 7-02-06, at 4:45 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: There are so many different types of scams. This particular scam has been used a number of times on campus and has been featured in the Campus Watch. Kudos to this student, she realized something was not right and notified the police. This subject realized, a little too late, that his intended victim recognized his con game. ROBERT L. MOORE HALL, 2515 Speedway Theft: A black Samsung cellular telephone was stolen from a fourth floor study desk located inside the library when the former owner went to the restroom. Loss value: $50.00. Occurred on: 6-30-06, between 1:30 PM and 1:40 PM. ROBERT A. WELCH HALL, 105 East 24th Street Graffiti: Words written in green indelible ink were discovered inside a first floor corridor. Loss value: $50.00. Discovered on: 6-30-06, at 4:12 PM. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor (2 Counts): Two UT students were observed taking down UT parking signs along the 2000 block of San Jacinto Blvd. During the investigation, the officer detected a moderate odor of an alcoholic beverage on the breath of both subjects, and determined that both subjects were under the legal age of 21. Both subjects were issued a field release citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. One subject informed the officer that he had already gotten into trouble the night before. Occurred on: 7-01-06, at 1:30 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: Ahh, the trials and tribulations of alcohol. Some lessons in life are harder to learn then others. What starts out as fun and games may end up costing more then you are willing to pay. A good rule of thumb to remember: The legal drinking age in the State of Texas is 21. So if you are under 21, don't drink. The price you will pay…it varies. UNION BUILDING: #4 West Mall Criminal Mischief: A UT staff member discovered an 8-inch crack in the plastic paper towel dispenser located inside a 3rd floor men's restroom. The area had been cleaned earlier and the staff member had not noticed the damage. Loss value: $50.00. Occurred on: 6-30-06, between 5:00 PM and 11:00 PM. 100 BLOCK EAST DEAN KEETON Burglary of Motor Vehicle: The driver's side window of a silver Ford 2-door was discovered shattered. The owner of the vehicle discovered $10.00 in change had been stolen from the center console. The money had not been concealed due to the fact the console lid had been removed. Loss value: $110.00. Occurred on: 7-02-6, between 1:00 AM and 2:00 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Car burglars are not always after car stereos, packages, wallets, or purses. Car burglars are after anything that can be seen, easily taken, and they sense that there is a low risk in being caught. I understand that we are always rushing to work, to school, and to meetings; but take a minute, remove or conceal your personal property. If a thief cannot see what you have inside your vehicle, then he is more likely to move on to another vehicle. 200 BLOCK WEST 6TH STREET Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was observed staggering and stumbling as he walked. He enlisted the support of several parking meters to maintain his balance. The officer stopped and introduced himself to the subject. The subject turned and introduced himself to the officer, and informed the officer that he was drunk. The officer detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on the subject's breath and had already observed the subject's unsure balance. The subject was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking for Public intoxication.
