CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Monday, 07-03-06 and Wednesday 07-05-06. COLORADO APARTMENTS, 2501 Lake Austin Blvd Burglary of Motor Vehicle: The small vent window of a 1993 Toyota 4-door was discovered broken out. An infant high back car seat was stolen. The officer observed that an unknown subject had attempted to steal the in-dash stereo, but had been unable to break the dashboard. Loss value: $50.00. Occurred between: 7-02-06, at 5:00 PM and 7-03-06, at 11:00 AM. COLORADO APARTMENTS, 2501 Lake Austin Blvd Burglary of Motor Vehicle: The passenger window of a 1997 Toyota was discovered broken out and the in-dash stereo system was taken. The officer was unable to contact the owner. During the investigation, the officer located a neighbor who was watching over the other neighbor's property. The neighbor informed the officer that he had discovered the broken window the day before and had reported the incident to the Austin Police Department. Loss value: Unknown at this time. Discovered on: 7-02-06. Crime Prevention Tip: This is the time of the year when many of us go on vacations. In this case the owner had asked a friend to watch over his property while away. This is always a good idea. Prior to going on vacation, check with your local law enforcement agency and see if they offer a courtesy patrol. GEOGRAPHY BUILDING, 210 West 24th Street Suspicious Person: A UT staff member attempted to enter into a 4th floor office to clean it up. An unknown subject inside the room slammed the door closed as the staff member was entering. The staff member described the unknown subject only as an Asian male. The staff member did state to the officer that the subject was either stooped over or extremely short to the ground. During the investigation, the officer located a pair of binoculars next to the window. The officer noted that next to the Geography Building was Andrews Dormitory. Occurred on: 7-03-06, at 8:38 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Walk around any apartment complex, residential neighborhood, or college dormitory, you will observe that many people will close the ground level blinds and drapes to prevent others from looking in. However, those same individuals may not close the drapes or blinds on the second floor. Some perverts count on this small fact. I don't know who this person was viewing, but from his vantage point he had a selection of windows to chose from. PERRY-CANSTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Theft: An Apple iPod with Philips ear buds were stolen from the 2nd floor periodicals after being left unattended for 10 minutes. When the former owner returned, he discovered that his property was gone. The former owner observed what appeared to be his property with its new owner. The unknown new owner was described as: Middle Eastern male, 5'-06", thin build, goatee, and black "scruffy" hair. He was last seen wearing a red shirt and brown cargo pants. Loss value: $175.00. Occurred on: 6-27-06, between 1:50 PM and 2:00 PM. Reported on: 7-03-06. Crime Prevention Tip: It is unknown what would have happened had the victim reported this theft at the time he noticed his property missing. Quick reporting limits a thief's options. 400 BLOCK WEST 21ST STREET Driving While Intoxicated: A grey Volvo was observed sitting in the drive thru lane of a local area business that was closed. The driver placed her order several times before realizing the business was closed. The officer observed that the driver would nod off while waiting. The vehicle drove off to another local area business, that was open, and once again the driver would nod off. After receiving her food the driver committed several traffic violations and was stopped by the officer. The officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the breath of the driver. Seven unopened cans of beer were observed on the floorboard behind the driver. The driver had bloodshot, glassy eyes and her clothes were disheveled. When asked to exit her vehicle, the driver needed to support herself on the side of her vehicle. When the officer asked the driver to submit to a Standard Field Sobriety test, the driver raised on the balls of her feet, clenched her fists and began to hyperventilate. She then asked the officer to "massage her feet" so that she could calm down. The driver refused to submit to a Standard Field Sobriety test because several of her friend and her lawyer told her not to. During the investigation, the officer was able to determine that the driver was a danger to herself and to others. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated. Occurred on 7-03-06, at 4:45 AM. 3500 BLOCK LAKE AUSTIN BLVD Driving While Intoxicated / Possession of Marijuana: A white Honda was observed at the intersection of Red Bud Trail and Lake Austin Blvd without its head lamps on. The officer also noted that both tires on the driver's side of the vehicle were deflated and the rims were bent. The officer stopped the vehicle and identified the driver. When the driver rolled his window down, the officer noted a very strong odor of alcohol and the over powering aroma of vomit. The driver had evacuated the contents of his stomach on his dash, console and driver's seat. During the investigation the driver submitted to a Standard Field Sobriety test, but due to balance and coordination issues refused to do two of the tests. The subject was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated. During a search incidental to his arrest, the officer discovered a clear plastic baggie, under the driver's seat, that contained marijuana. Occurred on: 7-04-06, at 3:00 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 15 alarm calls, and 13 unsecured door reports between 07-03-06 and 07-05-06.
