Crime Prevention of the Day: As we are all aware by now, the UT telephone system failed for a short period of time on Friday. If an emergency arose, many of us would have dialed 911 using our cellular telephones, to request assistance. Once the Austin / Travis County 911, operator realized the call was being generated for the University of Texas, the operator would transfer the caller to the University of Texas police department. For the person requesting assistance, this slows down any emergency response by the police department, Austin EMS, or Austin Fire Department. I would like to encourage everyone to preprogram the main telephone number of the UT police department into their cellular telephones. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 24 alarm calls, 4 lighting survey, 3 medical emergencies, and 9 unsecured door reports between 07-06-06 and 07-010-06. Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime. Your call may help solve or prevent a crime. Campus Watch comments should be directed to Officer Darrell Halstead at 512-232-9634 or Darrell.halstead@austin.utexas.edu . Prepared by DWH
