Report for 07/11/2006

CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Monday, 07-10-06 and Tuesday, 07-11-06. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A Nike backpack containing a gold wedding ring, Apple iPod, Movado wrist watch and a pair of pants was stolen from the 3rd floor basketball court after being left unattended. Loss value: $ 450.00. Occurred on: 7-10-06, between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Theft / Evading Arrest: A UT student reported observing two Hispanic males walking around the bicycle racks located on the southwest portion of the building. The student recognized the descriptions of both subjects from the Campus Watch. When officers arrived at the scene, they observed both subjects attempting to cut through self-locking cable lock with a small pair of bolt cutters. When both subjects realized the police were in the area, they attempted to flee on foot. One unidentified subject threw a grey backpack into a small stand of trees before jumping into Waller Creek and evading the police officer. The second subject tripped and fell trying to escape. He got up tripped again and was caught by the police officer. During the investigation the subject told the officer that he was trying to put air into his bike tire, even though an air pump was never found. Since the bicycle was UT registered, the true owner of the property was quickly located. The non-UT subject was taken into custody for Theft and Evading Arrest and transported to Central Booking. Loss value: $500.00, Recovered. Occurred on: 7-10-06, at 10:57 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: There are several factors that came together to make this arrest happen. A well informed student realized what he was seeing was suspicious and notified the UT police department about the suspicious activity. I contacted this student today to congratulate him in helping UTPD, and to herald the Free Pizza Offer. The student, it turns out, is a Campus Watch subscriber and recognized the two subjects from a prior entry. The other factor that assisted in this case was that the owner of the bicycle had taken the time to register his property with Parking and Transportation. STUDENT SERVICES BUILDING, 100 West Dean Keeton Street Harassment: A UT staff member reported receiving several harassing telephone calls at his 5th floor office. The staff member stated an unknown male caller would engage his female employees in inappropriate sexual conversations. The caller would claim that he has a sexual problem and would start nontheraputic, inappropriate sexual comments. The staff member used the *57 calling feature to successfully trap the unknown caller's telephone number. Occurred since: 7-02-06 to 7-10-06. UNION BUILDING, 34 West Mall Suspicious Person: A UT staff member reported an unknown subject was sitting outside a women's aerobics class. The staff member stated that the subject had positioned his chair in a way that his legs were opened towards the females attending the class. The staff member approached the subject and asked him if he was a student or staff member. The subject told him "No" then left the area quickly. The subject was described as a white male, 30-40 years old, dark complection, and dyed blond hair with brown roots. He was last seen wearing an orange shirt, tan shorts and a black fanny pack. Occurred on: 7-10-06, at 5:55 PM. 2100 COMAL STREET Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was observed sitting on the sidewalk. During the investigation the subject stated that he was a current employee at Printing and Press. A check of UT records revealed that that the subject was not a current employee. The officer discovered during the investigation that the subject had several outstanding outside agency warrants. The subject was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 7-10-06, at 4:25 PM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 7 alarm calls, 1 Fire call, and 5 unsecured door reports between 07-10-06 and 07-11-06. Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime.
