CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Wednesday, 07-12-06 and Friday, 07-14-06. APPLIED COMPUTATIONAL & ENGINEERING SCIENCES, 201 East 24th Street Theft: A Dell laptop computer, two hard drives, and a pink backpack were stolen from a 5th floor common area after being left unattended. Loss value: $1,175.00. Occurred on: 7-12-06, between 6:15 PM and 7:15 PM. CAROTHERS DORMITORY, 2501 WHITIS AVE. Theft: A Giant bicycle (the brand of the bike not the size), was stolen from the bike racks located on the west side of the building, near the Communications Building, after being secured with a cable lock. Loss value: $500.00. Occurred between: 7-11-06, at 3:00 PM and 7-12-06, at 12:01 PM. CAROTHERS DORMITORY, 2501 WHITIS AVE. Fraud: A UT student reported unauthorized charges on her UT Bevo Buck account. During the investigation, UT police officers located a second UT student who had accessed several restricted areas when the unauthorized purchases were made. After identifying the second UT student, the student admitted to having made unauthorized purchases with someone else's UTID. Loss value: $ 71.20. Occurred between: 7-10-06 and 7-12-06. Crime Prevention Tip: There are a number of parents who are currently utilizing or will utilize the Bevo Buck system. The Bevo Buck system is attached to the student's ID and works the same as any debit / credit card. It is important to maintain the same level of security for your UTID as you would for any credit card. COMMONS BUILDING (PRC Campus), 10100 Burnet Road Theft: An Apple iPod Nano, several credit cards, Visa gift card, $20.00 in cash, and an LSU and UT ID, were stolen from an unsecured gym bag that was left unattended outside the men's locker room. Loss value: $410.00. Occurred on: 7-13-06, between 6:30 PM and 7:30 PM. JESTER ACADEMIC CENTER, 201 East 21st Street Theft: A brown purse with a broken buckle containing $8.00 in cash, along with a Cingular cellular telephone, several credit cards, and personal identification cards, were stolen after being left unattended on top of a pushcart for less then 2 minutes. The owner had left the cart in a public hallway while she entered a locked room. Loss value: $78.00. Occurred on: 7-12-06, between 4:08 PM and 4:10 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: It is the opportunity that a thief is looking for. Many thefts occur in under 30 seconds. Thieves simply walk past an item and pick it up as they pass. Never leave your property unattended. JESTER EAST DORMITORY, 203 East 21st Street Public Intoxication: A UT student was discovered lying on his bed unconscious. The officer observed visible signs on the bed, and inside a trash can that the subject had an extreme physical reaction to the overconsumption of an alcoholic beverage. Austin EMS treated the subject for alcohol poisoning. During the investigation the subject admitted to having consumed 9 shots of whiskey. The subject was transported to a local area hospital for treatment. A UT staff member informed the officer that several unidentified subjects discovered the student staggering along Guadalupe and helped him back to Jester. Occurred on: 7-14-06, at 1:05 AM. MAIN BUILDING, #1 South Mall Assault: A UT staff member reported that a UT student became very angry while attempting to register for classes. The student threatened to assault the staff member if he was not registered. Occurred on: 7-13-06, at 5:13 PM. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Theft: A UT student reported that an unknown subject stolen her purse while she was asleep on the 6th floor. The student heard her purse dragging across the table and woke up to see the subject walking away with her purse draped across his shoulder. The student confronted the subject and took her purse away from him. The unknown subject walked away telling her he was sorry. The unknown subject is described as: white male, 5'-8", tall with a medium build, brown hair, goatee with a small amount of grey in it, and brown eyes. The student stated the subject has an "honest face." He was last seen wearing a black t-shirt, shorts, and a black ball cap. Occurred on: 7-12-06, at 4:45 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Sleeping in public can be dangerous. Many reported thefts are due to unattended and unsecured property. There are thieves who are looking for any opportunity and a sleeping victim allows for that opportunity. If you feel the need to sleep in a public place, try to use your back or purse as a pillow or foot rest. This eliminates the opportunity for a thief to take your personal property. TAYLOR HALL, #8 East Mall Suspicious Activity: A UT staff member reported observing an unknown white male subject sawing through a lock. The staff member went inside the building to contact the police department. When the officers arrived the unknown white male had left the area, not waiting for the officers. The unknown subject was described as: white male, 6'-0", tan shorts, no shirt on, and wearing black boots. Occurred on: 7-12-06, 11:40 PM. TEXAS SWIM CENTER, 1900 Red River Theft: A red Cannondale mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the north side of the building after being secured with a cable lock. Loss value: $600.00. Occurred on: 7-12-06, between 1:15 PM and 3:15 PM. WEST MALL, 2300 BLOCK GUADALUPE Suspicious Person: A UT student reported that an unknown male approached her and informed her that she had "cute feet." The unknown subject stated that he advertises toe rings and wanted to take pictures of her feet. The student told him "NO" and walked away. The subject was last seen walking towards the Main Building. He was described as: White male, 5'-09" to 5'-10" and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing tan shorts, a light blue shirt, and a dirty grey ball cap. Occurred on: 7-12-06, at 11:30 AM. Reported on: 7-12-06, at 8:30 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: This is the third report received about this unknown subject wanting to photograph women's feet. In all three reports he has been seen around the West Mall and local businesses along Guadalupe. He has been using the same approach and is persistent until the female walks away. 300 BLOCK EAST 21ST STREET Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor (3 Counts): UT police officers observed a non-UT female lying on the sidewalk, outside a parked vehicle, in a pool of liquid that contained partials of undigested food stuffs. The driver, identified as a UT student, informed the officers that they were consoling their friend over a relationship issue. A second passenger inside the vehicle admitted to the officers that two unidentified males had taken them to a local area business and had purchased them alcohol. During the investigation, the officers learned that the female lying on the sidewalk was a 16-year-old juvenile. All three subjects were issued field release citations for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Due to the age of the juvenile the parents were notified. Occurred on: 7-13-06, at 1:21 AM 2300 BLOCK SAN JACINTO Driving While Intoxicated: The driver of a blue Hummer was observed driving erratically. When the vehicle was stopped the officer detected a very strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on the breath of the driver. The officer conducted a Standardized Field Sobriety Test and determined that the driver was intoxicated and presented a danger to himself. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 7-14-06, at 12:47 AM. 2400 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD. Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was stopping students and asking them for money. When he realized that the UT Police Department was being notified, he left the area running. A subject matching the description given by the reporting person was located at the intersection of Dean Keeton and San Jacinto. The subject denied asking anyone for money at the bus stop. During the investigation, the officer discovered that the subject had three outstanding outside agency arrest warrants. The subject was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 7-12-06, at 8:45 PM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 21 alarm calls, 5 medical emergency calls, 3 lighting surveys, and 10 unsecured door reports between 07-12-06 and 07-14-06.
