Report for 07/19/2006

CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Tuesday, 07-18-06 and Wednesday 07-19-06. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A backpack containing a Dell laptop computer, Apple iPod, cellular telephone, and a credit card was stolen after being left unattended by the basketball courts located on the 3rd floor. Loss value: $1,600.00. Occurred on: 7-18-06, between 6:30 PM and 7:30 PM. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A grey Jansport backpack containing a Sony cellular telephone and two credit cards was stolen from the basketball courts located on the 3rd floor. Prior to the student reporting the theft of his backpack there several unauthorized purchases made at local area business. Loss value: $125.00. Occurred on: 7-18-06, between 12:45 PM and 4:15 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: After the Daily Texan printed an article about the thefts in Gregory Gym on 7-14-06 the problem was brought to the attention, I hope, of everyone who works out at the gym. It is unfortunate, many still learn through the "school of hard knocks." Rec Sports has been working with the University of Texas Police Department to address this very issue. Rec Sports is currently providing the following options:  Day use lockers are FREE (you bring your own lock).  Coin-operated lockers are 25 cents.  Rental lockers are $25 per semester. In addition, Rec Sports staff members have posted signage warning patrons about the theft problems. 2600 BLOCK SAN JACINTO Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A non-UT was observed looking into vehicles parked along San Jacinto. The subject entered into an unlocked Toyota, and he was seen rummaging through the vehicle. Not finding anything inside the vehicle the subject closed the car door and continued looking for additional unsecured vehicles along San Jacinto. During the investigation, officers were unable to make contact with the owner of the Toyota to verify if any property was indeed missing. Occurred on: 7-18-06, at 11:31 AM. Crime Prevention Tip of the Day: This is the last week of Freshmen Orientation, for the past 7 weeks New Student Orientation and the University of Texas Police Department have been able to talk to about 98% of this year's incoming freshmen class. More importantly, we have been able to talk with the parents of these new incoming freshmen. Many of the parents and new students have been receiving the Campus Watch during the summer. I am hoping that this incoming class has been learning, not from the mistakes of others, but learning that the thieves are looking for that small opportunity to teach them a lesson in life. -Remember to engrave your property with your State issued driver's license number on two surfaces that are plainly visible. -Remember to never leave your property unsecured or unattended. -Remember to preprogram your cellular telephone with the main telephone number to the police department (512-471-4441). What starts here does change the world. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 10 alarm calls, 2 lighting surveys, 1 collision report, 3 suspicious activity reports, and 5 unsecured door reports between 07-18-06 and 7-19-06. Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime. Your call may help solve or prevent a crime. Campus Watch comments should be directed to Officer Darrell Halstead at 512-232-9634 or Darrell.halstead@austin.utexas.edu . Prepared by DWH
