CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 07-21-06 and Monday, 07-24-06. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A Samsung cellular telephone and leather wallet containing several credits cards were stolen from the basketball courts located on the 3rd floor. The victim stated the stolen items had been inside a cloth bag which he recovered inside a men's restroom. Loss value: $50.00. Occurred on: 7-22-06, between 4:35 PM and 6:30 PM. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A black Nike bag was stolen after being left unattended while the owner went to make a telephone call. The victim stated that a friend observed a heavyset Hispanic male in the area prior to the reported theft. Loss value: $20.00. Occurred on: 7-22-06, at 9:35 PM. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A Texas brand backpack containing a Sony CD player, running shoes, and SPF50 sunscreen was stolen after being left unattended next to the basketball court located on the 3rd floor. During the investigation the subject informed the officer that this was the second time within 6 months that all of his personal belonging has been stolen at Gregory Gym. The subject stated that on the first theft, he had placed his property inside a day-use locker but failed to pay the 25 cents to secure the locker. Loss value: $50.00. Occurred on: 7-23-06, 7:45 PM and 8:45 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: My father use to tell me growing up, fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. In this theft the property taken might add up to $50.00, but there are so many hidden costs that rarely listed or talked about. Such costs include paying to have your apartment re-keyed for the second time, or re-keying a keyless remote for your vehicle to prevent it from being stolen. Then there is the time spent in replacing all of stolen identification cards, UT ID, and driver's license. Twenty-five cents… sounds like a deal. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A red backpack containing, $150.00, in cash, a black leather wallet, several credit cards, and a cellular telephone was stolen from the basketball courts located on the 3rd floor. The victim told the officer that he had been playing basketball on several different courts and had place his property in an area that was visible while he was playing. Loss value: $200.00. Occurred on: 7-23-06, between 10:00 PM and 11:00 PM. GOLDSMITH HALL, #5 West Mall Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was discovered asleep inside a second floor men's restroom. When officers arrived he informed the officers that he had fallen asleep while on the toilet. During the investigation, the subject received a written criminal trespass warning and was escorted from campus. Occurred on: 7-22-06, at 12:19 PM JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Theft: A Specialized mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the west side of the building after being secured with a cable lock. Loss value: $250.00. Occurred between: 7-20-06, at 10:00 AM and 7-22-06, at 10:39 PM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Theft: A purple Specialized mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the west side of the building after the former owner secured the front tire to the bike racks with a U-shaped lock. During the investigation, the front tire with a quick release feature was found still secured to the bike racks with the U-shaped lock attached. Loss value: $250.00. Occurred on: 7-23-06, between 1:00 PM and 6:30 PM. PARKING LOT 113, 2200 Block Comal Street Burglary of Motor Vehicle: The driver's side window of a Ford Explorer was discovered broken out and the in-dash stereo was missing. A witness approached the officer and told the officer that he had observed two Hispanic males in the area and saw one carrying an object with wires coming out of the object. Both subjects were described as: Hispanic males, 5'-9", with short black hair. One subject was stocky in build and wearing a white muscle shirt. This subject was bleeding from his hand. Occurred on 7-23-06, at 5:05 PM. PHYSICAL PLANT, 1720 Manor Road Theft: Two UT staff members observed a silver Ford F-150 pull into the Physical Plant complex and park next to the copper recycling bin. An unknown black male exited the passenger's side and began grabbing and throwing copper wire and copper cable into the bed of the truck. When the unknown subject looked up and saw the two UT staff member, he jumped back into the truck. The vehicle sped out of the complex. The driver of the vehicle was described as a white male wearing a cowboy hat. The passenger as described as: Black male, 5'-8", and 140 lbs. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans. Loss value: Unknown at this time. Occurred on: 7-21-06, at 10:52 AM. PICKEL RESEARCH CAMPUS, 10,100 Burnet Road Driving While Intoxicated: A white Buick drove up to the guard gatehouse and the driver, after making several traffic violations, turned the engine off. The driver then removed the keys from the ignition and tossed them onto the passenger's seat and stared, unresponsive, out the window. The driver attempted to put the keys back into the ignition to drive away. The on-duty UT guard asked the driver for his keys and the driver complied. When the UT police officers arrived the driver told the officers that he believed he was on Mopac heading home. During the investigation officers observed collision damage of the subject vehicle. The subject informed the officer that an unknown vehicle had hit his vehicle while traveling on IH-35. Due to the driver's unresponsive demeanor, the officer requested a certified drug recognition officer. It was determined that the driver was operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicating substance. The subject was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 7-22-06, at 5:04 PM. SUTTON HALL, 210 West 21st Street Burglary: A Dell laptop computer was stolen from a locked third floor office. Loss value: $1,000.00. Occurred between: 7-19-06, at 7:30 PM and 7-20-06, at 10:00 AM. TEXAS SWIM CENTER, 1900 Block Red River Theft: A blue and grey Trek mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the north side of the building after being secured with a cable lock. Loss value: $150.00. Occurred on: 7-21-06, between 7:00 AM and 3:00 PM. 500 BLOCK DEAN KEETON Speeding / Possession of Alcohol by a Minor: A gold colored Chevy truck was observed traveling west at a high rate of speed. When the vehicle was stopped the officer observed several open cans beer inside the passenger compartment of the vehicle. During the investigation, officers located a keg of beer in the bed of the truck. The driver was issued a field release citation for Speeding and Minor in Possession of Alcohol. Occurred on: 7-23-06, at 3:25 AM. 600 BLOCK WEST 24TH STREET Public Intoxication: UT police officers observed a UT student staggering in the roadway. The student turned to look over her shoulder, and began flailing then fell into a trash pile. The subject had a difficult time sitting upright. During the investigation, officers detected a very strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on the student's breath and requested the student's driver's license. The student removed her shoe and handed it to the officer. The officer asked the subject how old she was, and she replied 3. During the investigation the student's skin became cold and clammy and she became more incoherent. Austin EMS was requested and treated the subject for alcohol poisoning at the scene. The student was transported to a local area hospital. Occurred on: 7-22-06, at 12:15 AM. 700 BLOCK EAST DEAN KEETON Assist Outside Agency: A 2001 Toyota was observed speeding eastbound without its headlamps on. When the vehicle was stopped, the driver informed the officer that her wallet and State issued driver's license had been stolen the day before. The driver presented the officer her Texas State Offender ID card and then made a res gesti statement to the officer that there was an active warrant for her arrest that should have been issued to her best friend. During the investigation, the officer located an outstanding outside agency warrant. The subject was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 7-23-06, at 1:16 AM 2500 BLOCK UNIVERSITY AVE. Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was observed staggering as he walked down the sidewalk. The subject was observed walking around Andrews, Blanton, and Carothers dormitories as if he were lost. When the subject was stopped he refused identify himself to the officers. Officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath and learned that the subject was under the legal age of 21 years. During the investigation, the subject told officers that he believed that he was at the Holiday Inn, but could not get in. Officers were able to determine that the subject was a danger to himself. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 7-22-06, at 7:24 PM. 2600 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Public Intoxication: Austin EMS was dispatched to the 2600 block of Speedway on a subject that was passed out. The subject was identified as a UT student. The subject was drifting in and out of consciousness. Officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the student's breath. Austin EMS treated the subject for alcohol poisoning and transported him to a local area hospital. Occurred on: 7-23-06, at 4:00 AM 2800 BLOCK GUADALUPE Driving While Intoxicated: A blue Honda was observed traveling the wrong way on a one-way street. The vehicle was stopped at the intersection waiting for the light to change. Since the driver was heading in the wrong direction, it was a very long light change until the officer activated his overhead emergency lights. During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the breath of the driver. The officer observed that the driver's eyes were bloodshot and glassy. During the investigation, the officer determined that the subject was a danger to herself and took her into custody for Driving While Intoxicated. The driver was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 7-23-06, at 1:55 AM. CRIME PREVENTION TIP: On August 1, 2006 the University of Texas will be participating in the annual National Night Out. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 24 alarm calls, 3 medical emergency calls,1 collision report, 3 suspicious activity reports, 3 lighting surveys, and 10 unsecured door reports between 07-21-06 and 7-24-06.
