CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Wednesday, 07-26-06 and Thursday, 07-27-06. GERGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Criminal Trespass Warning: A Rec Sports staff member observed a non-UT subject attempt to enter into the building without purchasing a day pass. During the investigation, the subject did not give an explanation as to why he had attempted to enter Gregory Gym. The subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning and escorted from the area. Occurred on: 7-26-06, at 4:50 PM. DEVELOPMENT BUILDING, 2901 N. IH-35. Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT staff member discovered a non-UT subject sleeping inside an alcove located on the north side of the building. During the investigation, the officer issued the subject a written criminal trespass warning and escorted him from the property. Occurred on: 7-26-06, at 3:39 PM. PERRY-CASTENDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Suspicious Activity: A UT staff member observed a non-UT subject cutting the lock off of a mountain bike located on the north side of the building. During the investigation, the officer observed a Parking and Transportation sticker affixed to the property. The bicycle registration confirmed that the subject cutting the lock off was the owner. Occurred on: 7-26-06, at 5:42 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: I would like to commend the staff member that took the time to report the suspicious activity inside the bike rack. It is important to remember a self-locking cable lock does not provide any security value. This case also shows the need to register your bicycle with Parking and Transportation. UT police officers can verify ownership and in some cases return that property to the rightful owner. WEST MALL OFFICE BUILDING, #3 West Mall Theft: A red 21-speed mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the west side of the building after being secured with a cable lock. Loss value: $50.00. Occurred between: 7-19-06, at 7:00 PM and 7-26-06, at 5:00 PM. 400 BLOCK EAST 23RD STREET Assault: A UT staff member was approached by a non-UT subject who asked her several personal questions. The staff member told the subject to leave or she would notify the police. The subject then asked the staff member for a hug and attempted to hug the staff member and place his hands on other body regions. The staff member notified UTPD and the subject was located a short distance away. The subject informed officers that if he were to receive a field release citation he would continue his assault behavior. The subject was taken into custody for Assault and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 7-25-06, at 11:56 AM. 2500 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Driving While Intoxicated: A silver Plymouth sedan was observed exceeding the speed limit and traveling left of center. When the vehicle was stopped, the officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on the breath of the driver. The driver was talking on his cellular telephone and told the officer that he would be right with him but he wanted to finish his telephone call first. During the investigation, the driver conducted several Standardized Field Sobriety tests. During those tests, officers determined that the subject had been operating a motorized vehicle while under the influence of an alcoholic beverage. The subject was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 7-27-06, at 2:42 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: It's a shame he did not phone a friend before his final answer. Currently, in Travis County the average cost for a lawyer, court costs, and fines is $15,000. Currently, the average cost for one year of your education at the University of Texas is $14,000. Average savings: $1,000.
