CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Wednesday 08-09-06, and Thursday 08-10-06. UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Graffiti: Black indelible marker was used to write a word on the side of a dumpster. Removal Cost: $100.00. Discovered on 08-08-2006 and reported on 08-09-2006, at 5:44 PM. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A gym bag was stolen from outside of the racquetball courts. Loss value: $28.00. Occurred on 08-09-2006, between 6:30 PM and 6:53 PM. UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Theft: A Toshiba laptop computer was stolen from the 2nd floor veranda. The subject left her property unattended to meet some friends. When she returned her laptop was gone. Loss value: $750. Occurred 08-09-2006, after 9:45 PM. 700 North IH-35 Frontage Road Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Guard observed a non UT subject swaggering and swaying to a vehicle near the UT System’s complex. The subject got into the driver’s seat of a white Volvo and drove off. An officer responded to the report and followed the subject. The officer observed the driver fail to maintain a single lane of traffic. The driver crossed the divided white line marker and drove several blocks straddling the two lanes. During the investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol coming from inside of the vehicle. The driver was fumbling through a stack of papers and told the officer that she had been out on 6th Street with some friends. The officer asked her for her insurance and driver’s license. She stated that her friends had her purse. She then reached behind her and retrieved her purse from the backseat. During the investigation, it was determined that the driver of the vehicle was under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point she was driving while intoxicated. She was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking Occurred on 08-10-2006, at 2:00 AM. PENNICK-ALLISON TENNIS CENTER, 1701 Trinity Criminal Trespass: A UT student was observed walking inside the locked gated area. The officer had to jump the fence to enter the center. The student jumped the fence to exit the center. The student started to walk away. The officer told him to stop. The student ran and rounded the corner. The officer followed and found the student sitting on the ground. During the investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath. The student told the officer he thought it would be “cool” to go inside. He stated that he had been drinking “a lot” and he knew he wasn’t supposed to be in the locked gated area. The student was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on 08-10-2006, at 2:05 PM. **Crime Prevention Tip: DALLAS, TEXAS – There have been 26 carjackings, in Dallas, in the past 9 days. It is important for motorists to remain alert, be aware of the other vehicles around you and if something around you doesn't seem right, call 911 or drive to a safe location. Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 41 alarm calls, 3 key assists, 3 unsecured door reports, 1 medical emergency, 1 lighting survey, 1 disturbance, and 1 assist outside agency between 8-09-06 and 8-10-06. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month - based on need. The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available.
