CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday 08-11-06, and Tuesday 08-15-06. Chick-Fil-A, UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Forgery: Counterfeit U.S. Currency: Some unknown subject used a counterfeit $20 bill to purchase their food. Occurred on 08-10-2006, between 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM. Reported on 08-11-2006, at 8:26 AM. BURDINE HALL, 2525 University Criminal Trespass and Evading Arrest: A non UT subject was aggressively soliciting to the point to where people were alarmed and felt threatened by him. The subject left the area before officers could arrive. Several more complaints were phoned in and his new location was discovered. Officers responded to the area. The subject fled from the officers. The officers followed. The subject tried to hide on a bus. The bus driver tipped off the officers. The subject was ordered off of the bus. He complied and fled once more, inside a building. The subject was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on 08-11-2006, at 8:40 AM. 3200 Guadalupe Driving While Intoxicated: An officer observed a black Toyota sitting at a red light at Guadalupe and 26th St. The officer could hear the driver yelling from approximately 300 feet away. The officer followed the subject to the red light at the next block. As the light turned green, the vehicle accelerated in such a manner that the tires lost traction and squealed. The vehicle continued on, weaving back and forth and then struck a curb. During the investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle and observed the driver’s eyes were bloodshot. The non UT subject stated she had been at a bar, with friends, having drinks. She stated she consumed two beers. When asked why she was yelling, she stated that she had a fight with her boyfriend and was talking to him on the telephone. When the subject exited her vehicle, the officer smelled a strong odor of alcohol and peppermint coming from her breath. The subject was chewing a peppermint. The Officer conducted a Standardized Field Sobriety Test and determined that the driver was intoxicated and presented a danger to herself. The driver was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on 08-12-2006, at 1:15 AM. 100 Block Martin Luther King Blvd. Public Intoxication: An officer observed a non UT subject walking on the sidewalk. As the officer approached the subject, she could smell a strong odor of alcohol coming from his breath. The subject had bloodshot and glassy eyes. The officer asked for some identification and the subject stated he only spoke Spanish. When asked in Spanish, the subject stated he didn’t understand. The subject could not maintain his balance while standing, he stumbled backwards. The subject was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on 08-12-2006, at 3:00 AM. Intersection at Guadalupe and Dean Keeton Public Intoxication: An officer observed a UT student staggering back and forth in the intersection. He was waving his hands in the air and singing very loudly. When the officer approached the subject, he detected a strong odor of alcohol coming from the subject’s breath. The officer asked the subject how he was doing and the subject stated he was drunk. The subject informed the officer that he was “legit,” because it was his 21st birthday. His speech was slurred, his eyes were glassy and bloodshot. The officer asked if he had a sober friend who could pick him up. The subject stated yes, but could not provide the officer with a phone number. The subject was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on 08-12-2006, at 3:05 AM. UT PARKING LOT #39, 2300 Red River Burglary of Vehicle: An unknown subject burglarized the vehicle of a non UT subject. A screwdriver was used to unlock the driver’s side door. The unknown subject broke the screwdriver off inside the ignition. Total cost of items stolen from inside the vehicle: $1,300.00. Total cost to repair the vehicle: $300.00. Occurred on 08-12-2006, between 4:00 PM and 4:30 PM. **CRIME PREVENTION TIP** Take everything out of your vehicle when you park and leave it unattended. Don’t let the bad guy go shopping on your dime. 2400 Whitis Ave. Reckless Driving and Wrong Way on a One Way: An officer responded to a report of reckless driving. A black Jeep, with Tennessee license plates, was seen driving the wrong way on a one way street and on a sidewalk. The vehicle almost struck several vehicles and pedestrians. The vehicle was traveling 30-40 m.p.h. in a 15 m.p.h. zone. Occurred on 08-12-2006, at 4:45 PM 2400 Pearl Driving While Intoxicated: An officer observed a green Jeep driving at a high rate of speed southbound in the 2900 block of Guadalupe. The vehicle also failed to come to a complete stop at a stop sign. The vehicle continued on and bottomed out as it crossed 25th St. The officer initiated his overhead lights and the vehicle pulled over into a private parking lot. As the UT student exited his vehicle, he walked backwards towards the officer. The officer immediately smelled alcohol coming from the subject’s breath and observed that he had glassy, bloodshot eyes. His shorts were wet with beer. The subject stated he had consumed “a few drinks.” The Officer conducted a Standardized Field Sobriety Test and determined that the driver was intoxicated and presented a danger to himself. The driver was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on 08-13-2006, at 2:10 AM. 1810 Red River Driving While Intoxicated: An officer observed a dark green Nissan sitting in a parking lot. Both right tires were blown out. He observed a non UT subject slowly exit the driver’s side and examine her vehicle. The vehicle was resting on it’s wheel rims. Pieces of the metal rims were missing. As the officer approached the subject, he could smell a strong odor of alcohol coming from her. He also observed that the subject had glassy and bloodshot eyes. The subject stated that she thought she had hit something while driving. During the investigation, it was determined that the driver hit a curb at the intersection of Martin Luther King Blvd. and San Jacinto. Part of her wheel rim was lying next to the curb. The subject stated she had come from a birthday party and had consumed 2 glasses of wine. The Officer conducted a Standardized Field Sobriety Test and determined that the driver was intoxicated and presented a danger to herself. The driver was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on 08-13-2006, at 3:00 AM. 1900 Trinity Driving While Intoxicated: A black Honda was seen driving the wrong way down a one way street. The driver turned once more down the wrong way on a one way street before coming to a complete stop. As the officer approached the vehicle, he detected a strong odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle. The non UT subject stated he had a couple of beers, earlier in the evening, and that he was going to a party at San Jacinto and Guadalupe (these streets do not intersect). During the investigation, the officer observed the driver had watery and glassy eyes. There was a strong odor of alcohol coming from the driver’s breath. The Officer conducted a Standardized Field Sobriety Test and determined that the driver was intoxicated and presented a danger to himself. The driver was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on 08-13-2006, at 3:05 PM. UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Criminal Trespass: Responding to a complaint, an officer placed a non UT subject into custody on the 2nd floor. The subject had a prior criminal trespass warning from this building. The subject was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on 08-14-2006, at 6:40 PM. Martin Luther King Blvd. and Guadalupe Public Intoxication and More Than One Valid Driver’s License in Possession: A taxi cab driver flagged down an officer because his customer was refusing to pay. His customer, an under aged UT student. The UT student had a strong odor of alcohol coming from his breath and had bloodshot eyes. His speech was impaired and slurred. He could hardly maintain balance while standing. The subject was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on 08-15-2006, at 1:30 AM. Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 87 alarm calls, 6 key assists, 9 unsecured door reports, 1 medical emergency, 3 suspicious activity reports, and 1 criminal trespass warning report between 8-11-06 and 8-15-06. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month - based on need.
