Report for 08/29/2006

CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Monday, 08-28-06 and Tuesday, 08-29-06. JESTER DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Theft: Two Apple iMac computers were stolen from a first floor study lounge. The former owners secured the computers with self-locking cables to the study desks. During the investigation, the officer saw that the cables had been cut and were left lying on the floor. Loss value: $1,000.00 each. Discovered: 8-28-06, at 9:43 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: If a self-locking cable will not prevent a bicycle from being stolen, how, will a self-locking cable prevent a computer from being stolen? Over the summer I had several parents ask about securing computers in this very fashion. As we can see this is not a deterrent for a thief. The recommendation is to mark all of your property with your State issued driver's license number or State issued ID card number. PARKING LOT 103, 2100 Comal Street Suspicious Activity: A UT staff member observed an unidentified white male looking into several parked vehicles along the east portion of the lot. When the unidentified male saw that he was being watched by the staff member he ducked down between two cars. The staff member went into his office and then contacted the police department 20 minutes later. During the investigation, several officers searched the area without being able to locate the subject. The subject was described as: light skinned male, 5'-7" to 5'-9". The subject was last seen wearing a white hat and a blue shirt. Occurred on: 8-28-06, at 5:30 AM. Reported 8-28-06, at 5:50 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: How fast would the officer have responded to this incident? Would this subject have been identified? These questions could have been answered. Quick reporting of suspicious activity or suspicious people correlates to a quick police response. PARKING LOT 111, 1301 East Dean Keeton Theft: All four hub caps from a vehicle parked in Lot 111 were stolen. The owner did not notice that the hub caps were missing until he arrived home. Loss value: $184.00 Occurred on: 8-28-06, between 7:00 AM and 3:00 PM. 2500 BLOCK RED RIVER Assist Outside Agency / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: A UT police officer observed a non-UT subject passed out on top of a bus stop bench. The subject became very argumentative and combative towards the officer since he interrupted her beauty sleep. The subject jumped off the bench screaming and flailing her arms while lunging at the officer. During the investigation, the officer discovered that the subject had an outstanding outside agency warrant for not wearing a seat belt. The subject was taken into custody for the outstanding warrant. During a search of the subject's personal property, the officer discovered a one-inch plastic pipe containing steel wool and a white residue. The residue tested positive for cocaine. The subject was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 8-28-06, at 7:45 PM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 35 alarm calls, 6 suspicious activity reports, and 10 unsecured door reports between 08-28-06 and 08-29-06.
