Report for 09/06/2006

CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Tuesday, 09-05-06 and Wednesday, 09-06-06. DARRELL K. ROYAL- TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 405 East 23rd Street Theft: An E-Z-go golf cart was reported stolen after being parked outside gate 26. Loss value: $3,500.00. Occurred between: 9-02-06, and 9-05-06. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A silver Nokia cellular telephone was stolen from inside an unsecured backpack. The backpack had been left unsecured inside a day use locker for less then 5 minutes. Loss value: $50.00. Occurred on 9-05-06, between 12:30 PM and 12:35 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: This thief must have felt comfortable to stand in front of the locker and search through the victim's backpack. If a thief is provided an opportunity to steal your personal property, they will take advantage of that opportunity. Take just a second and secure your property. Consider either renting a locker inside the locker rooms or bring your own lock and again secure your property in the day use lockers located inside the locker rooms. MUSIC RECITAL HALL, 2405 Trinity Ave Theft: A Toshiba laptop computer was stolen from inside a secured locker. When the victim returned to her locker, she observed that the lock was still intact. Loss value: $500.00. Occurred on: 9-05-06, between 2:55 PM and 4:15 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Many of you might be thinking, "How is this possible?" The officer did not identify the type of lock that the victim had been using to secure her computer. My guess is that it was a combination lock. These types of locks are very easy to defeat. Police call it Rapping. So, if you are currently using these types of locks it is time to replace them. They are defeated and then locked back up by simply hit the side of the lock. Doing so causes the lock to open up. The nice thing about these locks, is that they can be re-secured. The recommended lock is one that uses a key. SPEEDWAY GARAGE, 105 East 27th Street Burglary of Coin-operated Machine: The dollar bill receptacle of a Coca-Cola machine, located on the ground level, was discovered missing. Loss value: unknown at this time. Discovered: 9-05-06, at 9:33 AM. UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Burglary of Coin-operated Machine: A feminine hygiene products dispenser, located inside a second floor women's restroom, was discovered broken into. An undetermined amount of product and money were removed from the machine. Loss value: unknown at this time. Discovered: 9-05-06, at 2:45 PM. 400 BLOCK WEST 21ST STREET Driving While Intoxicated: A black Ford Mustang was observed squealing its tires and traveling towards on coming traffic. Several pedestrians were pointing and yelling at the driver, then yelled at the officer to stop the vehicle. When the vehicle was stopped, the officer observed that the driver appeared to be confused. When the officer asked the driver to roll down her windows, the driver turn off the car, and then attempted to roll the window down. The driver could not figure out why the window was not working. When the driver, identified as a UT student, finally figured out the correct operation of her vehicle's window, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol inside the vehicle. The driver was asked to step out of her vehicle. As she got out the driver needed to use the side of her vehicle for support. The officer observed that the drivers pants were unbuttoned and unzipped. The officer also observed that the driver had extremely bloodshot eyes and a strong odor of alcohol on her breath. The driver attempted to perform several Standardized Field Sobriety tests to no avail. The subject was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. During the investigation, officers discovered that the driver of the Ford Mustang had been involved in two separate Leaving the Scene Collisions. Occurred on: 9-06-06, at 12:25 AM.
