Report for 09/13/2006

CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Tuesday, 09-12-06 and Wednesday, 09-13-06. GOLDSMITH HALL, #5 West Mall Attempted Theft: A non-UT subject was observed kneeling beside a silver and red Raleigh mountain bicycle that was secured to the bike racks with a self-locking cable lock. When the subject saw a marked police vehicle he stood up and grabbed a blue backpack. The subject was ordered to stop. The subject placed the backpack underneath a tree and sat down. During the investigation, officers observed that the outer casing of the cable lock had been cut through and the braided cable had also been tampered with. The subject did not have time to properly close the backpack prior to placing it under the tree, and the officer observed a pair of bolt cutters sticking out of the open flap. The subject was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-13-06, at 2:14 AM. JESTER EAST DORMINTORY, 203 East 21st Street Possession of Marijuana: Four UT students were observed sitting at a table, passing a pipe back and forth after smoking from it. When stopped by a police officer, one subject admitted that they had been smoking. When asked what they had been smoking, the student replied, "We have been smoking weed." During the investigation, the officers located less then 2-oz. of marijuana and several glass and ceramic pipes. Three of the students were taken into custody for Possession of Marijuana and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on 9-12-06, at 6:11 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: The University of Texas and Housing and Food Division has a zero tolerance policy with drugs. Students have been removed from the dormitories after violating their Housing and Food contracts. REC SPORTS CENTER, 2001 San Jacinto Theft: A backpack containing two textbooks, Motorola cellular telephone, $10.00 in cash, and a credit card were stolen from an unsecured locker inside the women's locker room. During the investigation, the backpack, minus its contents, was discovered inside the men's restroom. Loss value: $480.00. Occurred on: 9-12-06, between 5:00 PM and 6:15 PM. TRINITY PARKING GARAGE, 1815 Trinity Attempted Theft: A UT staff member observed a non-UT subject using a hacksaw and wire cutters to remove a self-locking cable lock from a blue BMX style bicycle. The non-UT subject informed the staff member that since he had lost his key, he was cutting the lock off. The staff member became suspicious and notified the police department. The non-UT subject observed a marked police vehicle approaching and left his "fruits and tools" of the crime behind as he walked across the street to hide. As officers arrived, they observed a subject matching the description standing across the street from the garage. The subject was detained. During the investigation, the officer observed the hacksaw and wire cutters lying next to the bicycle and also noted that the bicycle was registered. The staff member positively identified the subject being detained as the subject attempting to steal the bicycle. The subject was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-12-06, at 10:36 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Congratulations to this staff who earned a free pizza from the University of Texas Police Department. As we can see, a self-locking cable lock does not provide any security. The minimum recommendation when securing your property is a U-shaped lock that incorporates a flat key. 2100 BLOCK SAN JACINTO Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student was observed passed out at the foot of the ATM machine. The student woke up and could not explain how he had gotten there. During the investigation, the officer detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the student's breath. The student was issued a field release citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 9-13-06, at 2:39 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 34 alarm calls, 3 suspicious activity reports, 2 medical emergency calls, 1 collision report, and 5 unsecured door reports between 09-12-06 and 09-13-06. Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime. Your call may help solve or prevent a crime. Campus Watch comments should be directed to Officer Darrell Halstead at 512-232-9634 or Darrell.halstead@austin.utexas.edu . Prepared by DWH
