CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Thursday, 09-21-06 and Friday, 09-22-06. Recovery of Stolen Property: Two textbooks that had been reported stolen from the Rec Sports Center were recovered from the University Co-Op. A UT student had attempted to resell the stolen books to a store employee. Charges were filed. Recovered property: $270.00. COMMONS BUILDING, PRC CAMPUS, 10100 Burnet Road Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was discovered sleeping in various portions of the building by staff members. The subject was asked to leave. Each time he was asked to leave he simply rolled over and went back to sleep. Upon the arrival of the officer, the subject woke up and was very alert and attentive towards the officer. The subject explained that he had been up for over 36 hours and was tired. The officer escorted the subject from the building and issued him a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on: 9-21-06, at 12:36 PM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Criminal Mischief: A UT student discovered three cracks in a "William Banks" violin after she had left the instrument inside a secured 9th floor dormitory room. Estimated damage: $20,000.00. Occurred 0n: 9-21-06, between 6:00 PM and 10:15 PM. ROBERT L. MOORE HALL, 2515 Speedway Failure to Identify / Attempted Theft: UT police officers responded to RLM on a reported suspicious person who had stolen a Dr. Pepper on 9-20-06. At the time of the theft the suspect was described as an Asian female, wearing a pink shirt and tan pants. When officers arrived, the owner of the vending cart pointed to an Asian female wearing a pink shirt and tan pants. The owner stated that the female had attempted to take a package of "Goldfish" crackers, and got her hand caught in the cookie jar. During the investigation, the subject stated that she was a current UT student, but provided a false name and date of birth. The officers realized that the subject was not forthcoming with her correct information; she was asked to repeat her telephone number and could not remember the number that she had just given. The subject admitted that she had lied about all of her personal information. The subject was taken into custody for Failure to Identify and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-21-06, at 10:10 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: Yesterday I had identified three things that need to happen in order for a theft to occur. What was not mentioned if the theft was easy and there was little chance of the thief getting caught, they return again and again. 2700 BLOCK RIO GRANDE STREET Driving While Intoxicated: A blue Volvo was observed disregarding an official traffic control device, ran a stop sign, then committed several other traffic violations. When the officer activated the police vehicle's overhead emergency lights, the driver of the Volvo stopped her vehicle in the middle of the road. The driver then stepped out of her vehicle and moved towards the sidewalk. When the officer made contact with driver, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath. The officer noted that the driver's eyes were bloodshot and that she had a blank expression on her face. When the driver spoke, her words were slurred and hard to understand. During the investigation, the officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests. The driver was unable to pass any of the administered tests and was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-22-06, at 1:40 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 37 alarm calls, 3 suspicious activity reports, 2 medical emergency calls, and 5 unsecured door reports between 09-21-06 and 09-22-06.
