Crime Prevention Tip: There will be many more individuals entering into the dormitories or randomly stopping students on campus in an effort to create the opportunity to "scam" your hard earned money. Crime Prevention Tip: Many of us think that items left inside a vehicle are of little value or no value at all. For a thief, these same items are an enticement. They will find a way in which they enter your vehicle and take your property. 2400 BLOCK SAN ANTONIO STREET Driving While Intoxicated / Displaying a Fictitious Driver's License: A red Jeep was observed accelerating at a high rate of speed after the traffic light turned green. The officer observed the driver of the vehicle commit several additional traffic violations prior to getting the vehicle to stop. During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath. The officer observed that the driver's eyes were bloodshot and watery. During the investigation, the officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the driver of the Jeep. The driver was unable to pass any of the tests and was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated. During the course of the investigation, a back-up officer observed the passenger place a driver's license into his rear pants pocket. When the passenger was asked for his driver's license he removed a second driver's license from his wallet. The officer requested the subject to remove the second driver's license from his rear pants pocket. The second license was given to the officer and the officer determined that the second Texas driver's license was fictitious. The passenger was taken into custody for Displaying a Fictitious Driver's license and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 10-12-06, at 2:30 AM. 2400 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Evading Arrest or Detention: A non-UT subject riding a grey Bianchi road bicycle attempted to pass a marked police vehicle on the right side of the roadway. The rider then hit the passenger side window with his hand then sped away. The officer observed the rider disregard the stop sign as he sped off. The officer attempted to stop the rider for the traffic violation. The rider refused to stop, even after being directed to do so over a public address system. The rider led the several officers south, where they lost sight of the rider. Two State Troopers observed the chase and attempted to stop the subject. The subject rode between both troopers. The subject was located again near 6th Street and again was told to stop by a UT officer over a public address system. The subject refused to stop and led the officer to the Town Lake Hike and Bike trail where the bicyclist was apprehend after a short foot chase. Occurred on: 10-11-06, at 6:33 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: There are three main forms of transportation within Austin and at the University of Texas, vehicular, bicyclist, and pedestrian. All three forms of transportation are addressed in the Texas Transportation Code. Vehicles as well as bicycles are required to obey the same traffic laws, since both forms of transportation share the same roadways within the City of Austin and the University of Texas. UTPD, and I'm sure ADP, receives a number of complaints each year from motorists complaining about bicyclists disregarding a traffic control sign, light, or traffic direction sign. UTPD, and I'm sure again ADP, receives a number of complaints each year from bicyclists complaining about motorists not sharing the roadway, using force or intimidation to move a bicyclist over to the shoulder of the roadway. Is there a solution to this problem? I think there is. Simply obey the traffic code and share the road. 2500 BLOCK NUECES Driving While Intoxicated: A Toyota was observed running through an intersection that is controlled by a stop sign without stopping. The officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath after the vehicle was stopped. When the driver was asked for his driver's license, he opened up his wallet but was unable to locate it. The officer saw that the license was the first item in the wallet. During the investigation, the officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety test to the driver. The driver was unable to pass any of the tests. During the Romberg test, when the driver is asked to tilt his head back and close his eyes, the driver asked the officer not to kick him in the crotch. The driver informed the officer that he use to do this in grade school. During the test, the driver placed both of his hands in front of his crotch. After failing all of the Standardized Field Sobriety tests and modifying his hand placement the driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 10-12-06, at 1:31 AM.
