This is a safety issue faced by many universities across the country. According to State law a bicycle is considered a motor vehicle, same a car, truck, or police vehicle and must obey the same traffic laws afforded to any vehicle (Chapter 13 Texas Driver's handbook). The problems faced by universities occur when individuals, riding a bike, think that the traffic laws do not apply to them. There a few traffic laws a bicyclist, in Texas, need not worry about are the insurance and seatbelt laws, everything else can be applied. The current point system attached to the Texas driver's license can be affected by citations issued to bicyclists running a stop sign, failing to yield, or any other moving traffic violation. On another topic, to avoid serious (head) injury consider wearing a helmet.
