CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 11-17-06 and Tuesday, 11-21-06. Over the weekend I received an email from a Campus Watch subscriber. The subscriber wanted to pass along a tad bit of information: Austin does not fall in the list of top 10 worst cities regarding bicycle thefts anymore. In previous years, Austin was indeed on the list. PARKING LOT 114, 2200 Leona Street Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A Sony AM/FM/CD stereo was stolen from a 1994, GMC truck. During the investigation, the officer discovered that in an attempt to steal the vehicle, the steering column had been broken. Loss value: $500.00. Occurred between: 11-16-06, at 10:00 PM and 11-17-06, at 11:11 AM. PRATHER HALL DORMITORY, 305 East 21st Street Theft: A bicycle seat was removed from a silver Mongoose mountain bicycle that was secured to the bike racks, located on the southwest portion of the building. Loss value: $25.00. Occurred between: 11-16-06, at 4:00 PM and 11-17-06, at 4:00 PM. LADYBIRD JOHNSON WILDFLOWER CENTER, 1844 La Crosse Ave. Burglary-Building: A door was pried open and items were out of place at the Café. Loss Value: Unknown. Damage to Property: $150.00. Occurred: 11-18-06, between 2:00 AM and 2:59 AM. TOWNES HALL, 721 E. Dean Keeton Suspicious Person: A Black male, 5’ 08” tall, 130 lbs, between 20-21 years of age, wearing a grey sweat jacket with a hood, and dark shorts confronted a UT staff member on the 2nd floor. He told her he wanted to go into the nearby library and have sex with her. He made thrusting gestures with his hands and lower body. The staff member told him “No” several times and started towards a group of people. The male subject left the area. Occurred: 11-18-06, at 11:10 AM. 2100 Block of Guadalupe ST Driving While Intoxicated and Open Alcoholic Container: An officer observed a white Chevrolet Coup speeding and swerving in the roadway. The officer activated his emergency lights to initiate the traffic stop. The driver finally stopped at the 3200 block of Guadalupe ST. As the officer approached the vehicle, he detected a strong odor of alcohol emitting from the vehicle. He saw that the driver and passenger side airbags were deployed and the front windshield was busted due to the airbag deployment. The driver had an open can of a popular brew in the center beverage console. The driver’s vehicle also had a flat front tire and fresh damage on the front passenger side. The officer asked the driver if she had been involved in a collision. She stated no and that the damage, to the vehicle, occurred prior to her driving. The driver stated she was not injured. The driver’s speech was slurred and her eyes were bloodshot. The officer detected an odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath. The driver stated she’d consumed 4 beers. When asked her location, the driver stated 12th ST and Chicon ST. The driver consented to performing The Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. The driver’s performance showed that she was intoxicated. The driver was arrested and transported to Central Booking. While at Central Booking, the driver consented to two breath specimens. The results, of both specimens, were over twice the legal limit. Occurred: 11-20-06, at 3:14 AM. JESTER ACADEMIC, 201 E. 21st ST Theft: While left unattended and unsecured, a white MacBook laptop was stolen from the 3rd floor tutor area. Loss Value: $1500.00. Occurred: 11-20-06, between 6:00 PM and 6:02 PM. STUDENT SERVICES BUILDING, 100 W. Dean Keeton Theft: A pink leather credit card holder was stolen out of a purse from the lobby of the Emergency Care Room. Loss Value: $25.00. Occurred: 11-20-06, between 4 PM and 6 PM. CHEMICAL PETROLIUM ENGINERING, 200 E. Dean Keeton Burglary-Building: Someone gained unauthorized entry into a lab and stole a black Dell 17” flat screen monitor. Loss Value: $1,000.00. Damage to Property: $50.00. Occurred between: 11-18-06, 3:30 PM and 11-20-06, 7:45 AM. JESTER WEST, 201 E. 21st ST Theft: A black with silver trim, slider Samsung cell phone was stolen out of a computer lab. The phone was left unattended on a table. The owner walked from the table to the printer when her phone was stolen. The suspect was described as a Black male, 6’0” tall, medium build, light greenish eyes, short hair, and wearing a red and white hooded jacket. Occurred: 11-20-06, around 11:00 PM. Loss Value: $200.00. LBJ LIBRARY, 2305 Robert Dedman DR Criminal Trespass: A UT staff member witnessed two UT students disregarding the “KEEP OUT” and the “AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY” signs as they climbed up the scaffolding around the LBJ Library. As the officers arrived, they observed the two students climbing onto the roof. The students stated they wanted to see the “great view.” The two UT students were arrested and transported to Central Booking. Occurred: 11-20-06, at 11:30 PM. WENDY’S RESTAURANT-JESTER WEST, 201 E. 21st ST Criminal Trespass and Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student entered the Wendy’s, cut to the front of the line, and slammed his hand down on the counter, demanding his order. This student has had prior incidences at the Wendy’s and was issued a previous criminal trespass warning for threatening the employees and spitting. The UT student left the area before officers arrived. An officer caught up to the student before he entered his dorm room. He was carrying food from Wendy’s. He stated he had only gone into Wendy’s to get the food that his roommate had ordered for him. The officer detected an odor of alcohol coming from his breath. The UT student is under the age of 21. He was arrested and transported to Central Booking. Occurred: 11-21-06, at 1:42 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 42 alarm calls, 3 medical calls, 3 suspicious activity reports, 4 collision reports, 2 information reports, 7 unsecured door reports, and 10 key assists between 11-16-06 and 11-17-06. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license.
