Report for 01/09/2007

CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Monday, 01-08-07 and Tuesday, 01-09-07. HARRY RANSOM CENTER, 300 West 21st Street Improper Disposal of Human Waste: A UT student was observed creating a puddle on the northside of the building. During the investigation, the subject was located near the area. The student admitted to the officer that he had received an urgent call from nature and could not wait until he got to Jester Dormitory. The subject received a written referral to the Dean of Students office for the Improper Disposal of Human Waste. Occurred on: 1-07-07, at 11:42 PM. 700 BLOCK WEST 25th STREET Driving While Intoxicated / Driving While License Invalid / Possession of Marijuana: A yellow Kawasaki motorcycle was observed committing several traffic violations, including speeding (50 mph in a posted 30mph zone), as it was traveling westbound in the 700 Block West 25th Street. The vehicle was stopped and the officer observed that the driver had noticeably glassy and bloodshot eyes. The driver was very mellow, unlike the passenger who appeared to be upset. The officer asked the driver for a current driver's license. The driver handed the officer a current State issued ID card. The officer learned that the subject's driver's license was suspended. During the investigation, the driver set down a bag containing two 24-oz cans of Hurricane High Gravity, an alcoholic beverage. The officer asked the driver if he would submit to the Standardized Field Sobriety tests. The driver agreed and displayed several clues that indicated that he was intoxicated. After being taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated, the officer discovered a medicine bottle that contained a green leafy substance that was later identified as marijuana. The driver was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 1-07-07, at 1:36 AM. Crime Prevention Tip of the Day: Yesterday I reminded everyone about the new semester beginning and to take time to review your departmental after-hour authorization lists and alarm authorization lists. These two items are important to ensure and maintain the security within a building or office complex. While reviewing these lists, check the integrity of your alarm system. When was the system last serviced? When was the alarm system last tested to ensure functionality? CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 27 alarm calls, 2 lighting reports, one medical emergency call, and 5 unsecured door reports between 01-08-07 and 01-09-07. Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime. Your call may help solve or prevent a crime. Campus Watch comments should be directed to Officer Darrell Halstead at 512-232-9634 or Darrell.halstead@austin.utexas.edu .
