Report for 01/10/2007

CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Tuesday, 01-09-07 and Wednesday, 01-10-07. O'HENRY HALL, 601 West 6th Street Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was observed yelling at pedestrians as they passed him. UT police officers watched as the subject staggered towards two male subjects waiting for a bus and began poking one subject in his chest. The non-UT subject became very uncooperative after the officers stopped him. The subject refused to provide any personal information and made several accusations that the officers were racists and that the officers had been trained to be racists. The officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath along with bloodshot eyes. During the investigation, the subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 01-09-07, at 2:29 AM. PERRY-CASTENEDA LIBRARY, 101East 21st Street Theft: A Sony Vaio laptop computer was stolen from a 3rd floor study table after being left unattended. Loss value: $2,000.00. Occurred: 01-09-07, between 4:35 PM and 5:05 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Many of the students left for the holidays. Many of the thieves did not go on vacation. They are still looking for that opportunity to commit a theft. Prior to the spring semester starting, take time and mark your personal property by engraving your state issued driver's license number onto it. You can check out an engraver from the UT Police Department free of charge. Yes, a priceless endeavor considering many of us are cash poor after the Christmas Holiday and New Year's celebrations. T. S. PAINTER, 100 East 24th Street Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was taken into custody for an outstanding outside agency warrant for the Online Solicitation of a Minor. The subject was transported to Central Booking by the arresting agency. Occurred on: 01-09-07 2400 BLOCK SAN ANTONIO Assist Outside Agency: A green-colored Pontiac was observed traveling the wrong way on a posted one-way street. During the traffic investigation, the officer discovered that the driver had an outstanding outside agency warrant for Theft. The driver was taken into custody and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 01-10-07, at 1:05 AM. 2600 BLOCK WHITIS AVE. Criminal Mischief: A UT staff member reported damage to a lock that had been used to secure a hatch. Loss value: $100.00. Reported on: 01-09-07, at 3:15 PM. Crime Prevention Tip of the Day: At the beginning of a new year we all made personal resolutions. These resolutions involve making changes or doing something different in order to see a desired change. After a few days, however, those resolutions are forgotten. After UT was named the #1 Party School, my partner and I reviewed the alcohol stats for 2006 and compared those numbers with the previous year. Not surprisingly there was a drastic shift in the numbers. 2005 Arrests 2006 Arrests DWI 124 220 PI 182 218 Our New Years Resolution is to reduce these numbers through education as well as enforcement. But this resolution requires a community effort. That community is you and I, the students, the staff, the faculty as well as the parents. Identifying risky behavior is one step. Providing alternatives to parties is the next. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 31 alarm calls, and 5 unsecured door reports between 01-09-07 and 01-10-07. Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime. Your call may help solve or prevent a crime. Campus Watch comments should be directed to Officer Darrell Halstead at 512-232-9634 or Darrell.halstead@austin.utexas.edu .
