CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Thursday, 01-25-07 and Friday, 01-26-07. * * * * * ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE * * * * * WELCOME BACK SURE WALK Student’s United for Rape Elimination (SURE Walk) is up and running. Five nights a week, booths are set up in the FAC, Gregory Gym, and the PCL to walk students home at night from 9:00 PM-1:00 AM. For more information about this service please contact Kelly Hickman at: Hickman@mail.utexas.edu JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Theft: A blue and silver Trek mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the west side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $500.00. Occurred: between 01-24-07, at 7:30 PM and 01-25-07, at 10:57 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: Same story with the same results. The only difference - a new victim. I received this information a few days ago. Parking and Transportation has been tracking the reported theft of bicycles and the types of locks that were used by many of the former owners. 80% of the reported bicycle thefts at the University of Texas, the owners incorporated only a self-locking cable. 11% incorporated a U-shaped lock. What the pie chart does not show is the number of reported bicycle thefts where the owner utilized a two-lock locking system. The reasons for this, there were no reported bicycle thefts were the owner used a U-shaped lock (flat key) AND a thick self-locking cable lock. MAIN BUILDING, #1 South Mall Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor (2 Counts): UT police officers observed what appeared to be two UT students sitting on the south steps of the Main Building. As the officers approached, they realized that one student was straddling the other. And the other student's had concealed his hands inside the shirt of the student who was on top. During the investigation, the officers detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the breaths of both subjects. Officers learned that both subjects were under the legal age of 21. As the investigation continued, officer observed the male subject open his wallet and attempt to conceal a second State of Texas driver's license that was issued to another UT student who was of the legal age to consume alcohol. The second DL was confiscated and both students were issued field release citations for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Prior to being released both subjects were given referrals to the Dean of Students. Occurred On: 01-26-07, at 3:15 AM. 400 BLOCK EAST 23rd STREET Theft: A brown leather bi-fold wallet was stolen after falling out of a pair of sweatpants. Prior to notifying the police about the theft, the former owner retraced his steps back to the bus stop and discovered several pieces of paper that had been in his wallet lying in the roadway. Loss value: $25.00. Occurred on: 01-25-07, between 1:45 PM and 2:14 PM. 500 BLOCK NORTH LAMAR Suspicious Activity: A UT student stopped at the intersection of 5th Street and Lamar. While waiting for the traffic light to change, the student was approached by an unknown subject. The unknown subject began asking the student for money. The unknown subject then became very upset and unleashed a string of expletives that caused the young mother to blush. As soon as the light changed, the student drove away and heard something hitting the side of her vehicle. During the investigation, the officer did not see any damage to the vehicle. The unknown subject was described as: Black male with shoulder length hair, and last seen wearing a long brown coat. Occurred on: 01-25-07, at 8:21 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Kudos to this student. She kept her windows up and the doors locked. I understand that most everyone has or carries a cellular telephone. Do not hesitate to contact the police when you are approached by overly aggressive panhandlers demanding money. The City of Austin has passed City Ordinances addressing this very issue on city streets. The University of Texas Board of Regents have also pasted a university rule that prohibits soliciting on any of the University of Texas campuses. 2100 BLOCK S IH-35 FRONTAGE ROAD Driving While Intoxicated: A black colored Pontiac was observed traveling northbound in the south bound lanes of the IH-35 Frontage Road. The officer observed the vehicle accelerate and continue to north into incoming traffic. The vehicle was stopped after several other vehicles took defensive actions to avoid a head on-collision. As the officer approached the Pontiac from the passenger's side, the officer detected a moderate odor of alcohol emanating from the vehicle. The officer requested the driver's license and was handed a Visa credit card instead. The driver, identified as a UT student, was unable to locate his state issued driver's license. The officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath and asked the driver if he had been drinking. The driver admitted that he had consumed an alcoholic beverage. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests and the driver exhibited several clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. The Pontiac was impounded. Occurred on: 01-26-07, at 3:45 AM. 2100 BLOCK SAN JACINTO Public Intoxication / Evading Arrest / Resisting Arrest: Officers responded to the 2100 block San Jacinto on a reported of a half-naked intoxicated subject that was attempting to break into an occupied vehicle. Officers observed a white male subject standing on the driver's side running board and hanging on the vehicle's luggage rack while attempting to enter the vehicle. Officers ordered the subject off and away from the vehicle. The subject began displaying the shallow depth of his wordsmithing ability and told the officer "No!" When the subject stepped down from the vehicle he postured himself into a fighting stance. Officers again ordered the subject away from the vehicle. Since the subject's wordsmithing did not have the desired effect with the police officers, the subject tried communicating in sign language and raised both arms extending one finger from each hand towards the officers. He then turned and attempted to flee the area, but tripped and fell as both officers landed on top of him. The subject continued to resist being taken into custody. After being taken into custody the subject continued fighting with the officers. During the investigation, officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath. Due to his aggressive behavior he was a danger to himself as well as others. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication / Evading Arrest / Resisting Arrest and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 01-26-07, at 3:04 AM. 2500 BLOCK SAN ANTONIO Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was observed staggering and having challenges with his balance as he walked in the middle of a roadway. The officer made the block and discovered that the subject had passed out and had fallen into a flowerbed. During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath and used loud verbal commands to wake him up. Through slurred speech, the subject stated that he had consumed a large amount of vodka with friends. The officer observed that the subject had a black eye and several abrasions on his face. The subject stated that he had been in several fights and was attacked by a pit-bull. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 01-25-07, at 11:54 PM.
