CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 01-26-07 and Monday, 01-29-07. CHEMICAL PETROLEUM ENGINEERING, 200 East Dean Keeton Attempted Burglary: A UT student discovered an unknown subject had tampered with a money safe located inside a secured first floor student office. Reported on: 01-26-07, at 3:15 PM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Public Intoxication: A UT student was observed lying across the stair located on the north side of the building. Several people around her began flagging down a police officer as he was driving through the area. During the investigation, the officer learned that the subject was intoxicated to a point that she was passed out and unresponsive. Austin EMS was contacted and treated the subject at the scene for alcohol poisoning. The student was transported to a local area hospital for further treatment. Occurred on: 01-28-07, at 2:23 AM. PARKING LOT 104, 1900 Block North IH-35 Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT police officer observed a non-UT subject walking through the parking lot. When the subject observed the marked patrol vehicle cruising through the lot, the subject paid close attention to the officer. The officer left the lot and walked back into the area and discovered that the subject had set up a campsite. During the investigation, the officer issued the subject a written criminal trespass warning and escorted him from the area. Occurred on: 01-27-07, at 1:45 AM. UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Theft: A local business manager observed a non-UT subject remove two sandwiches from an open-faced cooler and place them into a plastic bag. The manager confronted the subject, who then returned the food back to the display case. During the investigation, the suspect remained in the area and was located by police. The suspect admitted that he had taken the food, but food vender declined in filing charges. The suspect was issued a written criminal trespass warning and escorted from the area. Occurred on: 01-26-07, at 10:24 AM. 100 BLOCK WEST 21st STREET Public Intoxication: A UT student was observed having extreme challenges as he attempted to walk and maintain his balance while walking in the middle of the roadway. The student lost the challenge and fell. In order to regain his upright stature the student crawled to the curb and utilized a street pole to pull himself up. During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the student's breath. The student's eyes were bloodshot and watery. The student could only mumble his words and wanted to go to bed. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 1-28-07, at 3:18 AM. 500 BLOCK WEST 25th STREET Possession of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student was observed driving a white Toyota RAV4 without the headlamps turned on as is required by State law after dark. During the investigation, the officer observed an unopened 20-pack of 12-oz. Bud Light in the backseat of the vehicle. The officer confirmed that the driver, sole occupant, was under the legal age of 21. The driver was issued a field release citation for Possession of Alcohol by a Minor. The case of beer was confiscated as evidence. Prior to being released the driver also received a written referral to the Dean of Students Office. Occurred on: 01-28-07, at 3:00 AM. 1900 BLOCK SAN JACINTO Driving While Intoxicated / Possession of Marijuana / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: A grey Honda Civic was observed running through an intersection controlled by a stop sign. As the officer approached the driver's side of the vehicle, the officer detected the aroma of burnt marijuana and a moderate odor of alcohol inside the passenger compartment. The officer observed that the driver's eyes were bloodshot and the driver's reactions were slow and deliberate. During the investigation, the driver denied having consumed any alcohol, even though the officer detected the odor on the driver's breath. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the driver. During the tests the driver displayed several clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated. During a search of the driver, the officer located a plastic baggie that contained a small amount of Marijuana. The officer searched the vehicle and discovered a second plastic baggie that contained the residue of a green leafy substance at the feet of a backseat passenger. As the investigation continued, the officer identified the owner of the second baggie of marijuana and charged him with Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. As the investigation concluded, the driver was transported to Central Booking and additional charges of Possession of Marijuana were filed. Occurred on: 01-28-07, at 3:33 AM. 2200 BLOCK NORTH IH-35 FRONTAGE ROAD Driving While Intoxicated: A UT police officer discovered a green Chevy truck that was stopped in an odd position. The back end of the vehicle was in the roadway and the front of the vehicle was across the sidewalk. During the investigation, the officer observed that the driver was belted into position but slumped over to the side. The officer was unable to awake the driver. The driver's door was unlocked so the officer opened the door and shook the driver until he woke up. The officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol inside the passenger compartment of the vehicle and on the driver's breath. When the driver got out of the truck his balance was so impaired that the officer had to physically carry him to a grassy medium. Due to the driver's substantially impaired balance he was unable to perform the Standardized Field Sobriety tests. The subject was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 01-27-07, at 3:40 AM. 2300 BLOCK SAN JACINTO Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student was observed staggering in the middle of the roadway. During the investigation, the officer observed that the subject's knees were bleeding due to falling down. The officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath and discovered that she was under the legal age of 21. The officer determined that the subject was intoxicated, but not to a point that she was a danger to herself or to others. The officer issued the student a field release citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Prior to being released the student received a referral to the Dean of Students office. Occurred on: 01-28-07, at 2:40 AM. 2500 BLOCK SAN JACINTO Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was observed pedaling a Redline bicycle as he weaved back and forth between the lanes. Each time the subject would ride past a group of pedestrians he would yell obscenities and profanities which would make any mother proud. The subject was stopped and the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath. The subject was very combative and "cocky" while slurring his speech to the officer. The officer noted the indicators of intoxication and the subject's belligerence towards the various groups of pedestrians and took the subject into custody for Public Intoxication. The subject was transported to Central Booking and his bicycle was impounded. Occurred on: 01-27-07, at 2:45 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: Many might be thinking, Why was he not arrested for DWI? According to State law a bicycle must obey the same traffic laws as a motorized vehicle. The key for a DWI arrest is that the suspect is operating a motorized vehicle. A bicycle in this instance is not motorized. 4100 BLOCK NORTH IH-35 Driving While Intoxicated: A black Nissan truck was observed swerving in and out of traffic while traveling north on the northbound Frontage Road. The vehicle was stopped after it collided with a curb and bounced back into the lane of traffic. During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath. The officers administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests and the driver displayed several clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 01-27-07, at 2:25 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 86 alarm calls, 3 medical emergency calls, one collision report, one fire alarm call, 4 suspicious activity calls, and 11 unsecured door reports between 01-26-07 and 01-29-07.
