Report for 01/31/2007

CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Monday, 01-29-07 and Tuesday, 01-30-07. COLLEGE OF BUSINESS, 2110 Speedway Criminal Trespass: A non-UT subject was discovered sleeping on the floor inside a 3rd floor men's restroom. The officer recognized the subject from previous encounters around campus. During the investigation, the officer took the subject into custody for criminal trespass after confirming that the subject had two prior written criminal trespass warnings. The subject was transported to Central Booking. In addition to other law enforcement action taken, the subject was issued a third criminal trespass warning. Occurred on: 01-31-07, at 4:00 AM. GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS, 100 West 21st Street Theft: A North Face backpack, containing a Sprint cellular telephone, Accounting textbook, and $60 in cash was stolen from inside a 3rd floor women's restroom, while the former owner was inside a stall. Loss value: $190.00. Occurred on: 01-30-07, between 4:10 PM and 4:15 PM. INTRAMURAL FIELDS, 4901 Guadalupe Burglary of Motor Vehicle (Criminal Episode): A UT student discovered an in-dash A/C panel lying on the ground next to her vehicle. The student turned the vent in to a UT staff member. The staff member began searching the lot and discovered the passenger window of a Chevy Tahoe broken out. The staff member contacted the police department. During the investigation, the officer discovered three additional vehicles with the passenger windows broken out. As the investigation continued, the officer learned that in some cases the victim had left a wallet or other personal items in plain view. Loss value: Unknown at this time. Discovered on: 01-30-07, at 7:18 PM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Suspicious Activity: A UT student reported an unknown subject approached her and asked to borrow a bar of soap as she was entering her 10th floor dormitory room. The student told him "No" then entered her room, locked the door and contacted the UT Police Department. During the investigation, the officers searched the building but were unable to locate the subject. The unknown subject was described as: Black male, 40 years of age, grey hair and acne scars on his face. The subject was last seen wearing a black shirt, blue jeans and a blue lightweight jacket. Occurred on: 01-30-07, at 9:37 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: A Standing Ovation for this student. Great Job. When this student encountered this subject, she followed her instincts and got to a safe place and contacted the police. It is a shame that this subject was able to get access to the 10th floor. The dormitory areas are private, the same as a house or apartment. When we are living in a house, apartment or duplex we seem to always lock exterior doors to prevent unauthorized entry into our abode. The same mindset needs to be used while living in the dorms. There is no need for any unaware student to be encountering any unauthorized person inside a "secured area." JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject entered a second floor classroom and began yelling and disrupting the instructor. The instructor requested an assistant to contact the police. During the investigation, the officers located the subject sitting inside the room. The subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning and escorted from campus. Occurred on: 01-30-07, at 6:38 PM. PARKING LOT 99, 700 Block East 20th Street Operating a Motor Vehicle Without a Front License Plate: A UT student encountered an irate UT student after parking her car. The irate student began pounding on the window and yelling. He claimed that the other student had stolen his parking spot. The female student became very frightened and contacted the UT Police Department on her cellular telephone. The student stayed on her telephone until the police officer arrived into the parking lot. During the investigation, the irate student drove by and the student pointed him out. The subject was stopped. The irate student claimed that the female had stolen his parking space and he got mad and yelled at her. As the investigation continued, the officer discovered that the subject was operating a motor vehicle without a front license plate and issued him a field release citation for the traffic offense. In addition to other law enforcement action taken, the subject was referred to the Dean of Students Office. Occurred on: 01-30-07, at 2:00 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Aside from the parking issue, this student did a good job in contacting the police via her cellular telephone. A cellular telephone is by far the best crime prevention tool ever designed. And money that is well invested. From A Campus Watch Subscriber in reference to the message sent out on 1-30-07: I can see where the confusion may have crept in. The Defensive Driving Course costs $25.00; what is free in Texas is the Offensive Driving Course. Classes are held daily on I-35 in Austin, Central Expressway and LBJ in Dallas and Loops 410 and 610 in SA and Houston! CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 60 alarm calls, 2 medical emergency calls, one collision report, 3 suspicious activity calls, and 10 unsecured door reports between 01-30-07 and 01-31-07. Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime. Your call may help solve or prevent a crime. Campus Watch comments should be directed to Officer Darrell Halstead at 512-232-9634 or Darrell.halstead@austin.utexas.edu .
