Report for 02/02/2007

CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Thursday, 02-01-07 and Friday, 02-02-07. ALMETRIS-DUREN HALL, 2624 Whitis Ave Theft: A blue Raleigh mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the south side of the building after being secured with a U-Shaped lock. Loss value: $300.00. Occurred on: 2-01-07, between 5:00 PM and 7:15 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: This is the third bicycle that has been stolen from this area since the dormitory opened for the semester. We made great strides last year in NOT being named in the top 10% of cities for stolen bicycles. I want to remind everyone about the Hungry For Justice program. If you see any suspicious activity around a bike rack, we encourage you contact the police department. Because if that telephone call leads to a person's arrest for trying to steal a bicycle, the University of Texas Police Department will purchase you a pizza of your choice. BRIDGEWAY, 2616 Wichita Street Suspicious Person: A UT student entered the building to take a GRE test and was told that he could not take the test since he was over an hour late. The student became "loud" and refused to leave the building. The staff member notified the police by activating a panic alarm. Upon the arrival of the officer, the subject was located sitting outside. The student stated he became upset when he could not get an exception to take the test since he was over an hour late. The student was escorted from the area and referred to the Dean of Students. Occurred on: 2-01-07, at 12:55 PM. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT staff member discovered a non-UT subject sleeping at a computer station located on the 2nd floor. The staff member observed a pool of liquid on the floor below the subject's chair, and observed that the chair and the subject's pants were wet. During the investigation, the officer woke the subject up and detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the subject's breath. The subject believed that the officer was singling him out because he was sleeping in a public place. The officer informed the subject that he was there because the subject had urinated on himself, the chair as well as the floor while he was asleep. The officer issued the subject a written criminal trespass warning and escorted the subject from the building to a dryer area. Occurred on: 2-01-07, at 3:00 PM. UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Theft: A silver Marin mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the northside of the building after the former owner secured his property with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $250.00. Occurred on: 2-01-07, between 5:00 PM and 10:20 PM. UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Assault With Injuries: A UT police officer observed two non-UT subjects involved in mutual combat and a third subject attempting to break up the fight. During the investigation, the officer learned that both combatants were opposed to each other's personal political views and had been involved in a heated argument that led to the fight. As the investigation continued, several witnesses identified one subject as the instigator to the argument and assault. The officer took that subject into custody for Assault With Injuries and transported him to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-01-02, at 7:25 PM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 48 alarm calls, 3 suspicious activity calls, and 8 unsecured door reports between 02-01-07 and 02-02-07. Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime. Your call may help solve or prevent a crime. Campus Watch comments should be directed to Officer Darrell Halstead at 512-232-9634 or Darrell.halstead@austin.utexas.edu .
