CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 02-02-07 and Monday, 02-05-07. ALMETRIS-DUREN HALL, 2624 Whitis Ave Arson: An engraved plastic vinyl sign was set on fire causing damage to the wall and destroying the sign. Loss value: Unknown at this time. Occurred on: 2-03-07, between 1:00 AM and 12:01 PM. CENTENNIAL PARK, 1620 Red River Criminal Trespass Warning / Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was discovered camping along Waller Creek inside Centennial Park. During the investigation, the officer discovered that the subject had an outstanding outside agency warrant for a parole violation. The subject was taken into custody for the warrant and transported to Central Booking. In addition to other law enforcement actions taken the subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on: 2-04-07, at 7:45 PM. ERNEST COCKRELL JR. HALL, 2501 Speedway Theft: An Apple Powerbook G4 laptop computer was stolen from an unsecured 3rd floor classroom. The former owner left the laptop inside his backpack and the backpack was left unattended inside the room while he took a test at another location. Loss value: $1,000.00. Occurred on: 02-03-07, between 10:00 AM and 12:01 PM. ENGINEERING TEACHING CENTER, 204 East Dean Keeton Theft: A white Izod jacket was stolen from the 2nd floor lobby after the former owner left it unattended and unsecured. Loss value: $30.00. Occurred on: 02-02-07, between 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM. ENGINEERING TEACHING CENTER, 204 East Dean Keeton Theft: A blue Mongoose mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the southwest side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred: between 01-31-07, at 12:01 PM and 02-02-07, at 8:40 AM. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A black Motobecane bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the west side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable. Loss value: $400.00. Occurred on: 2-04-07, between 9:00 PM and 9:50 PM. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was discovered sleeping on a bench outside of the building. The subject informed the officers that he was tired and was on his way to meet friends north of campus. During the investigation, the officer issued the subject a written criminal trespass warning and escorted him from the campus area. Occurred on: 2-04-07, at 8:10 AM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed a subject pulling posters off of the walls. The officer yelled at the subject to stop and the subject fled the area. The officer caught the subject as the subject attempted to get onto an elevator. During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath. The officer noted the subject’s eyes were bloodshot and watery. The subject informed the officer that he had been drinking alcohol at a fraternity house. The officer discovered that the subject was under the legal age of 21 and issued the subject a field release citation for the Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 02-03-07, at 5:11 AM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Public Intoxication: UT Police Officers responded to a suspicious person that was harassing one of the residents and was refusing to leave the dormitory. During the investigation, the officers located the subject and observed that the subject was crying. The subject explained that he had broken up with his girlfriend and had driven to Austin to "woo her back." Officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath and noted that that the subject needed the support of the surrounding walls to maintain his balance. As the investigation continued, the subject displayed several clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication. The subject was being transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-03-07, at 3:10 AM. J.J. JAKE PICKLE RESEARCH CENTER, 10100 Burnet Road Harassment: A UT student approached the main gate leading onto the research campus and was granted access. Following established protocol, the student was required to sign in. The subject drew his rendition of the male genitalia on the signature line then handed the clipboard back to the UT guard. The guard saw the rendition and was offended. During the investigation, the student explained that he was “just trying to be funny.” The staff member declined to file charges, but wanted the student referred to the Dean of Students Office. Occurred on: 02-03-07, at 2:29 AM. MAIN BUILDING, #1 South Mall Theft: A red Ozone mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the west side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $50.00. Occurred on: 2-03-07, between 2:30 PM and 8:10 PM. PHARMACY BUILDING, 2409 University Ave Theft: A purple shawl was stolen from an unsecured 3rd floor office after the former owner left the area. During the investigation, the former owner informed the officer that this is the second time that she has had clothing items stolen from this office. A pink cashmere sweater had been stolen two months earlier. Loss value: $80.00. Occurred on: 01-31-07, between 11:30 AM and 1:00 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: When setting up a business venture the key to success is location, location, location. For a thief, the key to success is opportunity, opportunity, and opportunity. For a thief, it is the same as running a small business, and locations along with opportunities rule the day. By simply removing the opportunity you are forcing a thief out of business. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Theft: A silver Trek mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the west side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable. Loss value: $250.00. Occurred on: 02-01-07, between 2:00 PM and 2:30 PM. SIMKINS DORMITORY, 2501 San Jacinto blvd Assault: UT Police Officers responded to Simkins Dormitory on a reported fight. Officers soon learned the cause of the fight involved two students arguing over whose clothes were in the dryers. Neither student wanted to file charges for Assault against the other. Both students were referred to the Dean of Students Office. Occurred on: 2-05-07, at 1:18 AM. WEST MALL, 2300 Block Guadalupe Disorderly Conduct: A UT student reported being approached by an unknown female twice over the course of two days. The student stated that during a recruiting drive, the unknown female began talking to him, then placed her hands on his shoulder continually while they talked about the student organization. The next day, the female attempted to kiss his hands and cheek. The student became offended and told her to stop. After being told to stop the female placed her head within several inches of the student’s nether region and explained to him that she would love to hum the National Anthem with a certain part of his body in her mouth. The subject stood up and began showing nude pictures of herself to other students that were standing around watching the events unfold. The unknown female was told to leave. The unknown female began screaming and yelling obscenities, then left the area. The unknown female was described as: White female, 5’-04”, slender build, shaved head, and last seen wearing a white dress with multi-colored dots, a long black dress with a fur collar, and a pink hat. Occurred on: 02-02-07, at 1:05 PM. 400 BLOCK SAN ANTONIO STREET Public intoxication / Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student was observed running down the middle of the roadway and knocking over signs, then danced his way in front of a UT police vehicle and another car. During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted that his eyes were watery and bloodshot. The officer requested the subject's state issued ID, but the subject seemed to have trouble remembering where he was and what the officer had requested from him. The subject was with a second UT student who simply stood on the curb and admitted to the officers that he to had been drinking. The officer deemed that the first subject was a danger to himself and took the subject into custody for Public Intoxication. The officer learned that the second subject was also under the legal age of 21 and had been consuming alcohol. The second subject was issued a field release citation for Consumption of Alcohol by A Minor. Occurred on: 02-02-07, at 2:17 AM. 1900 BLOCK TRINITY Burglary of Motor Vehicle / Fraud: The rear passenger's side window of a 2003 Ford Explorer was discovered broken out. During the investigation, the officer learned that an Apple iPod, radar detector, Fossil purse that contained a Silver Canon Elf camera and several credit cards were stolen from the vehicle. As the investigation continued, the officer learned that $500.00 in unauthorized charges had been made on one of the credit cards prior to the card being cancelled. Loss value: $1,320.00. Occurred on: 2-03-07, between 7:30 AM and 5:30 PM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 109 alarm calls, 7 suspicious activity calls, 6 suspicious persons calls, and 18 unsecured door reports between 02-02-07 and 02-05-07.
