CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 02-16-07 and Monday, 02-19-07. CHEMICAL PETROLEUM ENGINEERING BUILDING, 200 East Dean Keeton Burglary of Building: The president of a UT student group discovered that an unknown subject had entered into the student group's office and removed cash from an unsecured cash box that was located inside an unsecured desk. Loss value: $4.00. Occurred: between 2-16-07, at 4:00 PM and 2-189-07, at 4:34 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Student groups are the target for a number of burglaries that occur on a number of college campuses. Why? Many student groups have not developed strong protocol or training for cash handling and cash storage. All student groups will elect new officers each year and the out-going officer simply hands over keys, combinations, and other materials. As a student group, develop protocol that address security, safety, and access control. This protocol can be very simple by answering a few questions: Is the area alarmed? If yes, the alarm codes need to be changed. Does this student group handle money? If yes, develop a cash handling protocol. Many universities already have cash handling policies and training online. How many keys are issued to your area? How many keys are being reported lost or stolen? These questions can be answered by UT Locks and Keys. It might be time to re-key your area and regain access control. GOLDSMITH HALL, #5 West Mall Suspicious Activity: A UT student observed three unknown subjects attempting to gain access into Goldsmith Hall by climbing over a secured gate. The student challenged the subjects as to why they were doing what they were doing. They informed the student that they wanted to get inside Goldsmith. The student contacted the police immediately. Loss value: $250.00. Occurred: between 2-16-07, at 6:30 PM and 2-18-07, at 5:35 PM. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Criminal Trespass Warning: UT police officers discovered three subjects inside an enclosed area of the Gregory Gym Outdoor Aquatics Center. All three subjects were watching as a fourth subject was helping another subject who was dangling from the fence after being hung up. All five subjects were identified as current UT students. During the investigation, one student wanted to know why they could not swim since they pay student fees. The officer educated the subject about Criminal Trespass and the blaring fact that the facility was CLOSED. All five students received written referrals to the Dean of Students office. Occurred on: 2-17-07, at 3:13 AM. 2400 BLOCK HARRIS BLVD Driving While Intoxicated: A silver Honda was observed meandering back and forth as it traveled west along 24th Street. The meandering vehicle almost struck another vehicle that was also traveling west bound. The officer attempted to stop the Honda and the driver of the Honda did not respond. The officer activated his siren and the driver responded by turning on the right turn signal. When the Honda finally stopped, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath. As the driver exited her vehicle, the officer observed that the driver was swaying back and forth and needed the support of the Honda to stand up right. The driver informed the officer that she was coming from a sorority event where she had a lot of fun, but did not drink.
