Report for 02/20/2007

CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Monday, 02-19-07 and Tuesday, 02-20-07. * * * * * ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGES * * * * * The University of Texas Police Department would like to cordially invite you to attend The University of Texas at Austin Police Department’s Citizen Police Academy. The Citizen Police Academy is a course designed to give the public a better understanding of the Police Department. The goal of the Academy is to increase rapport between the Police Department and our community by providing citizens with enough information to dispel any suspicions or misconceptions they may have about the police. Please see the attached fliers for more information. My partner, Officer Layne Smith, and I would like to thank Chris Latham and Jeff Cherewaty with ITS for establishing the Campus Watch Archives and launching the web site today. http://www.utexas.edu/police/campuswatch/ PARLIN HALL, #2 South Mall Theft: A blue Gary Fisher mountain bicycle was stolen from the northeast side of the building after being secured to a small chain fence with a U-shaped lock. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred on: 2-19-07, between 12:01 PM and 1:00 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: The recommended method for securing your bicycle is to a fixed stationary object like a bike rack. The chain fencing that surrounds the South Mall is designed to allow vehicles access on the grassy areas. Look closely, and you will notice a D-ring that unscrews so that the chain can be dropped. So, the recommended method for securing your bicycle is to a fixed stationary object. Spring Break is around the corner. Time for planning a trip is running short. So who are you planning to go on Spring Break with? • Travel with someone you know and trust, and preferably with a larger group. Never allow members of your party to leave alone with strangers. Always travel in well-lighted areas. • Don't carry all of your credit or bank cards in your wallet or purse. Carry the minimum amount of cash that you will need, including a little backup. Traveler's checks are your best bet when on vacation. If you have extra cash, leave it in your hotel room, hidden from sight. Many hotels have courtesy safes inside many of the rooms. • Make sure your friends and relatives know where you will be vacationing, when you will depart, and when you expect to return. Call friends or family members to let them know that you have arrived and returned safely. • If you are robbed, don't resist - give up any money, jewelry, or other valuables. You can always replace material things! Call 911 as soon as you can. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 58 alarm calls, 4 suspicious activity calls, 3 suspicious persons calls, 2 medical emergencies, and 5 unsecured buildings between 02-19-07 and 02-20-07. Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime. Your call may help solve or prevent a crime. Campus Watch comments should be directed to Officer Darrell Halstead at 512-232-9634 or Darrell.halstead@austin.utexas.edu .
