Report for 02/23/2007

CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Thursday, 02-22-07 and Friday, 02-23-07. BERNARD RAPOPORT BUILDING, #5 East Mall Criminal Trespass: A non-UT subject was observed looking at the bicycles secured to the bike racks located on the east side of the building. The subject then entered the building and was stopped by the police. Several officers recognized the subject from prior arrests for theft. The subject was taken into custody for Criminal Trespass and was transported to Central Booking. Officers located a pair of wire cutters inside his pants pocket. Occurred on: 2-21-07, at 1:58 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Many thieves will return to this campus to commit additional thefts. That’s a fact. The subject featured above has been arrested a number of times during the commission of a crime or shortly thereafter. Fact is he returns back here. The question some of you might have is why. The UT campus is a target-rich environment. Take a minute and look around at your surroundings. How many theft opportunities do you see? More importantly, are you one of those opportunities? PETER T. FLAWN ACADEMIC CENTER, #2 West Mall Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT staff member observed a non-UT subject walking in circles and repeatedly stating he was there to pick up his personal belongings. During the investigation, the subject continued to walk around a table. As the investigation continued, the subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning and escorted from the building. Occurred on: 2-22-07, at 9:50 PM. JESTER DORMORITY, 201 East 21st Street Public Intoxication: A UT student was discovered unconscious inside a first floor men's restroom. The officer made several failed attempts to wake the subject up. The officer applied a sternum rub which caused the unconscious student to rapidly regain consciousness. During the investigation, the officer requested the student's driver's license but was handed a folded piece of paper. The officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath and noted that the student was confused as to his location. The student believed he was in Forrest Hills, about 300 miles north of the men's restroom floor he was occupying. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-23-07, at 4:30 AM. JESTER DORMORITY, 201 East 21st Street Suspicious Activity: A UT student reported that an unknown subject attempted to gain entry into her SECURED dormitory room by "jiggling" the door handle. The student looked through her door viewer but did not see anyone standing in front of her door. During the investigation, the officers searched the area with negative results. Occurred on: 2-23-07, at 7:01 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: This student did a great job. Her dorm room was secured and she looked through the door viewer instead of opening her door to see who was trying to get into her room. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Public Intoxication / Resisting Arrest: A UT police officer observed two UT students in a physical altercation. The officer soon learned that one of the UT students was attempting to prevent another UT student from leaving the dormitory because he was highly intoxicated. The officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the second student's breath. The officer also observed that the second student was very aggressive and non-compliant. He informed the officer that the entire situation was fecal matter, and stated his father knew all of the Texas Legislators. Due to the subject's aggression and willingness to fight the subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication. As the officer was affecting the arrest, the subject began struggling and aggressively pulled away from the officer. Several officers assisted the student gently to the ground. The subject was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-22-07, at 11:54 PM. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student was observed yelling at his shoes. The officer observed that the subject was being supported up right by another student. During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the student's breath and noted that the student's eyes were bloodshot and watery. The officer determined that the student was under the legal age of 21. The officer asked the subject if he knew what the drinking age was in Texas. The student replied, "Nope, I'm from Oklahoma." The student was issued a field release citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and released to his sober friend. Occurred on: 2-23-07, at 12:45 AM. STUDENT SERVICES BUILDING, 100 West Dean Keeton Assist Outside Agency: A UT staff member discovered an unescorted juvenile inside the building. The staff member convinced the juvenile that the police could help her. During the investigation, the officers discovered that the juvenile was listed as a runaway. The juvenile was detained and released to the reporting agency. Occurred on: 2-22-07, at 5:08 PM. WALTER WEBB HALL, 2500 Guadalupe Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was observed soliciting for money on the east side of the building.
