CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Monday, 06-05-06 and Tuesday, 6-06-06. BENEDICT HALL, #7 South Mall Criminal Trespass: A non-UT subject approached a UT student and sat beside her on a bench located on the 2nd floor. The subject began asking the female student personal questions, such as if she were married, her sign, if she would braid his hair, and if she was of legal age. The student, being polite, answered his questions. The subject then asked her if she wanted to have sex and stated he had protection. The student became offended and left to contact the UT police. Officers located the subject. COLLEGE OF PETROLEUM ENGINEERING, 200 East Dean Keeton Street Occurred between 6-01-06, at 10:00 AM and 6-05-06, at 4:50 PM. Burglary: A UT student discovered coins scattered over the floor inside a second floor student group office. The student searched further and discovered the group's money safe had been removed from a locked desk drawer and the cash box was pried open. Loss value: Unknown at this time. GEOLOGY BUILDING, #10 East Mall Occurred on: 6-05-06 at 3:29 PM. Suspicious Person: A UT faculty member observed an unknown subject looking into various classrooms and labs located on the 5th floor. After consulting with another faculty member and discussing previous thefts, the UT police were notified of incident. Crime Prevention Tip: How quick will the response from the police department be? This is a question everyone asks when concerned about criminal activity, or when there is a crime in progress. How quick will the general public be when notifying the police department about suspicious activity, that may be a precursor to criminal activity? This question many police departments can not answer. Quick notification, leads to a faster response from the police department, which in turn prevents a suspect from being able to walk away after committing a crime. Moncrief-Neuhaus, 2015 San Jacinto Blvd Occurred on: 6-05-06 at 5:50 PM. Criminal Trespass: A non-UT subject entered into Moncrief looking for the locker rooms so that he could shower. When he was told to leave the building the subject then asked the staff member for a plate of food. Once again he was told to leave the building. Within just a short time frame, the staff member once again saw the same subject enter into the building. Once again the staff member escorted the subject out of the building. The subject sat down outside the main doors and went to sleep. During the investigation, officers discovered that the subject had received two prior written criminal trespass warnings earlier in the day. BRACKENRIDGE FIELD LABS, 2907 Lake Austin Blvd Occurred on: 6-04-06 at 3:07 AM. Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was observed staggering and walking in circles, while looking at street signs. When stopped, officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on his person. The subject stated that he had consumed way too much alcohol and repeated "Head not right." The officer determined the subject was a danger to himself. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Occurred on 6-03-06 at 5:46 PM. Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was discovered passed out on the brick retaining wall located on the north side of the library. The subject had in his possession a one-gallon bottle of Vodka, of which he had been partaking (between and of the contents of the bottle were remaining). During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his person. The subject was confused as to where he was, his birth date, and his home address. The officer determined that the subject was a danger to himself. The remainder of the alcohol was destroyed. 300 BLOCK EAST MARTIN LUTHER KING BLVD. Occurred on 6-03-06 at 3:44 AM. Public Intoxication: A UT police officer observed a non-UT subject staggering and swaying in the middle of the roadway as vehicles were passing him on either side. When stopped, the officer detected a moderate odor of an alcoholic beverage on his person. The subject told the officer that he was trying to talk to all of the people in the street and tell them about God. The officer determined the subject posed a danger not only to himself but other motorists as well. 2100 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD. Occurred on: 6-04-06 at 4:20 AM. Driving While Intoxicated: A silver Isuzu SUV was observed traveling east on 21st Street. As the vehicle approached the intersection at San Jacinto, the vehicle failed to stop. The officer observed the vehicle come to a complete stop in the intersection, blocking both the north and south bound lanes. When the officer stopped behind the vehicle, he detected an odor of an alcoholic beverage on the driver's person. The officer also observed a female passenger slumped over but awake. When the driver exited the vehicle he needed to support himself with the open door. The officer also observed that the driver's pants were unbuttoned and his belt was also undone. After failing several standard field tests it was determined that the driver was operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of both alcohol and an illegal substance. Crime Prevention Tip: Tomorrow is the start of freshmen orientation which will last for six weeks. For many this will be the first time that they have been away from home and the excitement of being part of the University of Texas will overwhelm a few. The allure of the parties and the night life on 6th Street will be to great a temptation. For some a thief will become their very first professor and educate them about leaving their personal property unattended or unsecured. Each of us needs to take these incoming freshmen under our wings and help them. "What starts here changes the world," can take on a new meaning. Let's let the thieves know we are watching. CAMPUS WIDE Occurred at various times. Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 21 alarm calls, 2 key assists, 3 emergency call, and 10 unsecured door reports between 06-02-06 and 06-05-06.
