Report for 06/01/2006

CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Wednesday, 05-31-06 and Thursday, 06-01-06. GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS, 100 West 21st Street Occurred on: 5-31-06, between 3:00 PM and 6:05 PM. Theft: A blue Specialized Rock Hopper mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike rack located on the southwest side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. During the investigation, the officer located the cable lock in a nearby bush; the lock had been cut in half. Loss value: $150.00. Crime Prevention Tip: As we can see by the fact that the cut lock was located, there is very little security with just a cable lock. A U-shaped lock that uses a flat key is the recommended lock. The best alternative to discourage a thief is to incorporate a two-lock locking system. This system uses a U-shaped lock and a thick self-locking cable. Another step that you can take to discourage a thief is to register your bicycle with the university. You can do this directly on line at: www.utexas.edu/parking/transportation/biking/bicycle_register.php 1800 BLOCK TRINITY, NURSING SCHOOL Occurred on: 06-01-06 at 1:25 AM. Criminal Trespass / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia / Assist Outside Agency: An unidentified subject used the a Police Help call box to report that he was being harassed by a non-UT subject under the 18th Street bridge. During the investigation, officers located the non-UT subject under the bridge. Officers discovered that the subject had an outstanding outside agency warrant for an alcohol violation. During a search, incidental to his arrest officers located a 4-inch glass pipe that contained a small amount of marijuana. Crime Prevention Tip: As you have read, not everyone carries a cellular telephone or has access to a pay telephone. Currently there are 135 "Police Help" call boxes located through out the main campus, Married Student Housing, and Pickle Research Campus. You can use these call boxes to contact the UT police directly to report criminal activity or if you are in need of assistance. If you own a cellular telephone, I would like to encourage you to pre-program the main number to the police department into your telephone. The number is (512) 471-4441. If you dial 911 while on campus then the Austin Travis county 911 operator will transfer your call to the UT police dispatcher. This will delay the officer's response time to your location. CAMPUS WIDE Occurred at various times. Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 11 alarm calls, 2 key assists, 1 welfare concern report, and 6 unsecured door reports between 05-31-06 and 06-01-06.
