Report for 03/15/2007

CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Wednesday, 03-14-07 and Thursday, 03-15-07. 1900 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Driving While Intoxicated (Felony): A silver Hyundai was observed traveling south in the 2100 block of San Jacinto and running a stop sign. The vehicle was stopped and the officer detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the driver's breath. The driver stated that he had been at the Crown and Anchor throwing darts. With slurred speech, the driver informed the officer that he was taking San Juaquin Street to his home in another Central Texas community. During the investigation the officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the driver. The driver displayed a number of clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated. The officer discovered that the subject had two prior convictions for DWI and filed the enhanced DWI charge. Occurred on: 3-14-07, at 12:28 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: This criminal enhancement, if convicted will allow this individual to spend the next two years in a State Jail, one stop short of a State prison. 2500 BLOCK NUECES STREET Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol by a Minor / Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor (4 Counts): A red Hyundai was observed traveling the wrong way on a posted one-way street. During the investigation, the officer detected a moderate odor of a malted beverage on the driver's breath. The driver admitted that he had consumed several drinks earlier in the evening. The officer soon learned that the driver was under the legal age of 21. The driver did not display enough clues from the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to be taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated; however, the driver was issued a field release citation for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol by a Minor. The driver asked that his vehicle be released to a sober friend that was a passenger. As the investigation continued, the officers discovered that 4 of the 5 passengers had also been consuming alcohol and were also under the legal age of 21. The four passengers were issued field release Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and released at the scene. The 5th passenger took everyone home. Occurred on: 3-14-07, at 11:18 PM. Crime Prevention Tip of the Day: Part of today's tip is being provided by several Campus Watch subscribers. I just received a call from a company claiming that they wanted to know the University’s exact location. When I asked whom they were and why they were asking, the woman on the phone didn’t give me a company name, but stated that they are doing research for a company that wants to do business with the University. Several times each years unknown individuals will "cold call" UT staff in an attempt to obtain information that can then be used to defraud the university. Toner cartridge numbers or departmental information seem to top the list. If time allows, ask the caller questions, name of the company, employee's name, their mailing address or their telephone number. If time is short, simply hang up. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 30 alarm calls, 2 suspicious person calls, 2 suspicious activity calls, and 10 unsecured buildings between 03-14-07 and 03-15-07. Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime. Your call may help solve or prevent a crime. Campus Watch comments should be directed to Officer Darrell Halstead at 512-232-9634 or Darrell.halstead@austin.utexas.edu .
