CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 03-16-07 and Monday, 03-19-07. ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE The University of Texas Police Department is seeking your assistance in locating the owners of the following property that was taken in or around the San Jacinto Residence Hall: Blue GT mountain bicycle Silver Marin (Gary Fisher) mountain bicycle Yellow Raleigh mountain bicycle These bicycles were recovered after a theft suspect was taken into custody. BELMONT HALL, 2109 San Jacinto Blvd. Theft / Failure To Identify: A customer observed a subject walk out of the Longhorn LTD with bags of merchandise without paying for the property. A UT police officer located the subject several blocks away. When the subject saw the marked police vehicle, he changed directions several times to avoid the officer. The subject was soon stopped. During the investigation, the subject could not remember his own name and birthday; he gave the officer two different names and dates of birth. As the investigation continued the subject was positively identified by the store clerk and taken into custody for Failure to Identify . The subject was found to be in possession of two leather national championship jackets. The subject was charged with Theft as well and transported to Central Booking. Loss value: $1,000.00 (Recovered). Occurred on: 3-17-07, at 5:45 PM. COLORADO BUILDING, 702 Colorado Street Theft: A UT employee discovered the gas tank cover open and the gas cap removed from a UT vehicle. During the investigation, the staff member stated approx. 2-3 gallons of gasoline had been siphoned from the gas tank. Loss value: $10.00. Occurred: between 3-06-07, and 3-18-07. Crime Prevention Tip: Gas prices are going up…again. This is a very easy crime to commit and prevent. A hose and a gas can are the only items a thief needs to bring. A locking gas cap, not a locking gas cover, is all that is needed to prevent a thief from taking your gas. How do I know? This happened to me. Is there a locking gas cap on my tank? Absolutely. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Possession of Marijuana With the Intent to Deliver / Possession of a Controlled Substance With the Intent to Deliver: UT police officers responded to a first floor dormitory room on a report of a strong odor of marijuana. During the investigation, the officers knocked on the door and were allowed into the dorm room. The officers interviewed the students about the marijuana smell. One resident refused to allow the officers to search the room. The officer sealed the dorm room and obtained a search warrant and executed the warrant. During the execution of the warrant, the officers discovered a large plastic baggie containing a large amount of a green leafy substance that later tested positive for marijuana. Officers also discovered numerous tablets of Xanax. One student was taken into custody for Possession of Marijuana With the Intent to Deliver / Possession of a Controlled Substance With the Intent to Deliver and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 3-19-07, at 4:00 AM. WALTER WEB HALL, 2500 Guadalupe Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was observed soliciting on the east side of the building. The subject had an open guitar case with a sign requesting "donations." The subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning and escorted from the property. Occurred on: 3-18-07, at 4:09 PM. 300 BLOCK INNER CAMPUS DRIVE Assist Outside Agency: A black Jeep was observed traveling the wrong way on a posted one-way street. During the investigation, the officer discovered that the driver had three outstanding outside agency arrest warrants. The subject was taken into custody for the warrants and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 3-17-07, at 8:30 PM. 400 BLOCK EAST 30th STREET Driving While Intoxicated: A white Dodge truck was observed running through the stop sign at the intersection of 21st Street and San Jacinto. The truck crossed over the center dividing line and narrowly missed striking an oncoming vehicle. The Dodge truck was stopped and the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath. The driver's eyes were bloodshot and watery. The driver informed the officer that he was coming from a local 6th Street bar after watching his son perform. The driver stated that he had consumed three of four beers while there. During the investigation, the officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the driver. The driver displayed a number of clues that indicated that he was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 3-18-07, at 1:24 AM. 1800 BLOCK RED RIVER Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A UT police officer observed a subject yelling and removing articles of clothing. The subject was stopped and the officer soon learned that the subject was paranoid and was hearing voices. The subject had in his possession a black nylon case that contained a number of CDs. The subject informed the officer that he had gotten the case from a vehicle and pointed to a white Honda. The doors to the vehicle were unlocked and there was no sign of forced entry. The subject was taken into custody for Burglary of a Motor Vehicle. Due to the subject's mental health concerns he was transported to a local area hospital with a Peace Officer's Emergency Commitment. The owner of the Honda was located and she identified the CD case as hers. The owner declined to file charges. Occurred on: 3-18-07, 4:30 PM. 2000 BLOCK MAPLE AVE. Driving While Intoxicated: A white Nissan truck was observed traveling at a high rate of speed and committing several additional traffic violations. During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath. The officer asked the driver several questions, and the driver answered the officer's questions while slurring his words. The officer asked the driver if he had consumed any alcohol, the driver admitted to drinking just one pint of beer. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the driver. The driver displayed several clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated. At this point the driver admitted to the officer that he had consumed two beers. The driver was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 3-17-07, at 2:30 AM. 2500 BLOCK GUADALUPE: Assault With Bodily Injury / Driving While Intoxicated (Enhanced): A UT police officer observed a vehicle stopped in the far right traffic lane in the 2500 block of Guadalupe. Three subjects got out of the vehicle and walked back to the officer's vehicle. One subject claimed to have been assaulted by the driver. The subject stated that the driver had hit him with a closed fist on the left side of his face. The officer saw that the subject had a red mark on his face. During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath. The driver was very uncooperative and refused to answer any of the officer's questions. The officer learned from the passengers that they had all been at a local 6th Street bar and that that the driver struck the victim because the victim owed the driver some money. All of the witnesses placed the driver behind the wheel operating the vehicle. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and Assault with Bodily Injury. The officer learned that the driver had one previous conviction for DWI and another pending DWI case. The officer filed the enhanced DWI charge. The subject was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 3-17-07, at 3:13 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 62 alarm calls, 7 suspicious person calls, 5 suspicious activity calls, and 18 unsecured buildings between 03-16-07 and 03-19-07.
