The official "30 second rule" is the amount of time it takes a thief steal a bicycle and leave the area. A cheap self-locking cable extends this time, but not by much. If you are interested in making a thief's life more difficult, and you want to further extend the amount of time expended in stealing a bike, look at the following options. The minimum requirement is a U-shaped lock that uses a flat key. For maximum protection and to increase the degree of difficulty, look at incorporating a two-lock locking system. This system uses the U-shaped lock along with a self-locking cable lock. RUSSELL A. STEINDAM HALL, #7 East Mall Theft: A Giant bicycle (The brand name not the size) was stolen from the bike racks located on northwest side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock.
