The student stated that as he was avoiding being hit, he used his foot to push himself off the driver's side door. The student stated that the driver ran up behind him and forced him to the ground and began strangling him. Several unidentified students separated them. The driver then left the area. Charges are pending. Occurred on: 3-27-07, at 9:38 AM. Crime Prevention Tip of the Day: For the past several days UTPD has been receiving several reports of aggressive solicitation around the fringes of campus, primarily west of the Guadalupe. Several reports have indicated that the suspects do not comprehend the word "No." Solicitation is a learned behavior. Many people have learned that it is easier to get out of a confrontation by simply giving the panhandler money. Why? Because that person goes away. The more aggressive panhandler has learned that the more aggressive they are the faster a person will give them what they want- money. Several of the reporting people have reported that they felt very uncomfortable in handling this aggression. There are several things that a person can do to get out of a situation involving an aggressive panhandler: - Enter into the nearest business and request the store clerk to call the police. - Contact the police department via a cellular telephone. - Never walk alone, always walk in groups. There is an old axiom; there is strength in numbers. - Know the location of the nearest emergency call box. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 28 alarm calls, 3 suspicious person calls, 5 suspicious activity calls, 3 medical emergency calls, and 10 unsecured buildings between 03-27-07 and 03-28-07. Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime. Your call may help solve or prevent a crime. Campus Watch comments should be directed to Officer Darrell Halstead at 512-232-9634 or Darrell.halstead@austin.utexas.edu .
