When asked, the driver admitted that his doctor cautioned him not to mix alcohol and his prescription medication together for obvious reasons. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety test to the driver. Due to the driver's intoxication level, he was unable to perform several of the tests. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 3-30-07, at 1:53 AM. Crime Prevention Tip of the Day: With the recent increased reporting about aggressive panhandlers along the Guadalupe area by Fox 7 News and KXAN 36 News, there is a need to remind everyone about personal safety when going about our normal day-to-day activities. Activities as simple as making a withdrawal from an ATM machine or walking down the sidewalk can make each one of us vulnerable to predators. Many of these individuals prey upon students who are "on their own" for the first time and are uncomfortable when being confronted for money. There are several things that you can do to decrease the chance that you will be confronted by an aggressive panhandler: Make eye contact with other individuals as you are walking. This is a visual clue that you are paying attention to those that are around you. Don't be afraid to say "No." The word "No" is a complete sentence, with a clear understanding. There are some individuals who may not understand the concept of N and O together. When you are confronted and you are uncomfortable with the situation, don't be afraid to ask someone for help. Walk to the closest business and ask the clerk or manager to call the police department. Avoid walking alone. There is always strength in numbers. If you don't believe in this concept look at the number of panhandlers that work together in groups. If not, use your cellular telephone to call 911. Many of these predators will leave in order to avoid contact with the police officers. If you witness panhandling, contact the police department to make a report. There are Regent's rules at UT that prohibit this type of activity. The City of Austin has passed ordinances that prohibit solicitation near ATM machines and other areas. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 29 alarm calls, 2 suspicious person calls, 2 suspicious activity calls, 2 medical emergency calls, and 7 unsecured buildings between 03-29-07 and 03-30-07. Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime. Your call may help solve or prevent a crime. Campus Watch comments should be directed to Officer Darrell Halstead at 512-232-9634 or Darrell.halstead@austin.utexas.edu .
