Report for 04/05/2007

CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Tuesday, 04-03-07 and Thursday, 04-05-07. INTRAMURAL FIELDS, 4901 Guadalupe Failure to Identify: A UT staff member discovered a blue gym bag containing a wallet and a fictitious UT ID. During the investigation, a subject approached the officer claiming ownership of the blue gym bag. The subject identified himself as a current UT student. The officer was unable to verify the subject's identification based upon the name and date of birth given. The subject was insistent that he was a UT student. When asked for his driver's license, the subject began changing his story. The subject was taken into custody for Failure to Identify. During a search, the officer located the subject's driver's license and St. Edward's ID card. Occurred on: 4-04-07, at 8:39 PM. INTRAMURAL FIELDS, 4901 Guadalupe Criminal Trespass Warning: UT police officers responded to Whitaker Fields on a report of a suspicious person who was loitering. During the investigation, officers learned that the subject had been removed from the area by Rec Sports staff earlier this year, after the subject refused to show a valid UT ID. The subject was located near the soccer fields and told the officers that he knew why they were there. The subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning and escorted from the area. Occurred on: 4-04-07, at 7:57 PM. NURSING SCHOOL, 1710 Red River Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was discovered sleeping near the southwest exterior door. The subject stated that he had not made it back to the Salvation Army in time to sleep there. The subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning and escorted from the property. Occurred on: 4-05-07, at 12:09 AM. PARKING LOT 104, 1900 Block North IH-35 Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT police officer observed two female UT students attempting to help a third UT student overcome her balance and coordination challenges. During the investigation, the officer learned that the middle student had been consuming alcohol at a private party. The officer detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the student's breath and discovered that she was under the legal age of 21. The officer issued the student a field release citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. The officer did not detect any odor of alcohol on the breaths of the other two students. Occurred on: 4-05-07, at 4:23 AM. STUDENT SERVICES BUILDING, 100 W. Dean Keeton Forgery: Counterfeit U.S. Currency: After receiving a call from the bank regarding a counterfeit one hundred dollar bill in their deposit, a UT employee reported receiving a one hundred dollar bill for a transaction. At the time of the sale, the employee tested the bill with a pen used to detect counterfeit money and it was determined to be authentic. Occurred on: 03-29-07. Crime Prevention Tip: The pen test no longer works because counterfeiters have now mastered the correct paper used by the Federal Reserve Banks. The best method to detect counterfeit money is by searching for the hologram portrait that is embedded in the bill by holding it up to a light. Portraits of Washington, Hamilton, and Franklin are the most common seen. The second method is using an ultra violet light to detect the correct color glow for each numeric amount; i.e., the $100 glows red. If you are handling cash, take a minute and do not rush through a transaction. Double check some of the security features embedded into the US currency by the US Security Service and the Federal Reserved Banks. 200 BLOCK WEST 6th STREET Driving While Intoxicated: A silver Nissan was observed traveling the wrong way on a one-way street. The vehicle was stopped, and the driver informed the officer that the Lexus in front of her had struck her car while backing up. The second vehicle was also stopped. During the investigations, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the breath of the driver of the first vehicle. The driver admitted that she had been drinking at a bar on 6th Street and was now on her way home. The officer asked the driver to exit her Nissan so that she could perform several Standardized Field Sobriety tests. As the driver got out of her car, she lost her balance and began falling. With cat-like reflexes, the officer provided the driver much needed support. The officer attempted to administer the tests. The driver was unable to complete the tests. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 4-05-07, at 2:28 AM. 200 BLOCK WEST 6th STREET Driving While Intoxicated / Leaving the Scene Collision: A gold Lexus struck a silver Nissan while backing up. The Lexus then left the scene and was stopped by a UT police officer. After being stopped, the driver asked, "Oh…did I hit a vehicle?" The officer noted the slurred speech and a very strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath. The driver stated that she had consumed 5 to 6 drinks at a local bar on 6th Street. The driver submitted to the Standardized Field Sobriety tests and displayed enough clues that indicated that she was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. In addition to other law enforcement actions taken, the driver was also charged with Leaving the Scene of a Collision. Occurred on: 4-05-07, at 2:28 AM. 400 WEST 5th STREET Driving While Intoxicated: A silver Infiniti was observed traveling at a high rate of speed and then turned left from the center lane of traffic at the intersection of 6th Street and Guadalupe Street. During the investigation, the officer detected a very overpowering odor of alcohol on the driver's breath. The officer asked the driver if he had consumed any alcohol. The driver admitted to drinking "just one beer." The driver then stated that he was driving around the block to pick up friends and that they were to drive him home. The officer requested the driver to exit the vehicle. The driver refused to submit to the Standardized Field Sobriety tests. The driver expressed his concerns about getting himself into a "predicament." He stated that he did not intend to drive out of Austin; his friends were going to drive him to a hotel in Round Rock. The officer asked more questions and noted that the driver's speech was thick and his words were slurred. The subject was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 04-04-07, at 1:59 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: A quick trip around the block can lead to a quick trip to jail. Impairment does not begin with the last drink of the night. It begins with the first taste. DWIs and other alcohol-related offenses can ruin more than a college career. 2400 SAN JACINTO BLVD Reckless Driving: A UT student reported a black Lexus sedan almost struck her while she was in the crosswalk. The driver honked the horn at her and swerved as if to strike her with his vehicle. The driver appeared to be of average build, clean shaven, and was wearing a yellow shirt. The Lexus appeared to be new and very clean. Occurred on: 04-03-07, around 5:00 PM. 2500 UNIVERSITY AVE Theft: A red and black women’s mountain bike and the cable lock that was securing it were stolen from the bike racks north of Experimental Science Building. Loss Value: $100.00. Occurred on: 04-02-07, between 1:00 PM and 6:30 PM.
