The University of Texas Police Department would like to express our deep felt sorrow to the families and friends of the students and staff at Virginia Tech University. Our thoughts are with you. ADIMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE On 4-18-07 at approx 2:30 PM, the University of Texas Police Department arrested a known bicycle thief. The non-UT subject was in possession of a blue and silver Specialized mountain bicycle. We are currently unable to locate the owner of this bicycle since it was not registered with the University of Texas. Please contact UTPD at 471-4441 if you are missing this bicycle. The subject was transported to Central Booking, but we need to identify the owner in order to file additional charges. GEORGE I. SANCHEZ BUILDING, 1912 Speedway Criminal Mischief (5 Counts) / Criminal Trespass Warning (5 Counts): A UT staff member observed five non-UT subjects "grinding" their in-line skates along a metal hand-rail. During the investigation, the officers located a group of subject skating away from the area. Officers discovered paint chips embedded on the underside of the skates that was consistent to the paint found on the metal hand-rail. The officers also observed that the painted hand-rails were damaged. All five subjects were issued field release citations for criminal mischief. In addition to other law enforcement actions taken, all five subjects were issued criminal trespass warnings and escorted off campus. Loss value: Unknown at this time. Occurred on: 4-18-07, at 3:30 PM. ENGINEERING SCIENCE BUILDING, 2501 Speedway Theft: An Apple MacBook laptop computer was stolen after being left unattended and unsecured inside a first floor classroom. The former owner left his property in this manner in order to take a test next door. Loss value: $1,000.00. Occurred on: 4-18-07, between 1:15 PM and 2:00 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: This is the second laptop computer that has been stolen in this manner from this building. If you know that you that you are required to leave your personal property outside the classroom during a test, don't bring it with you. Leave these items in your dormitory, apartment, or your locked vehicle. JESSE H. JONES COMMUNICATION CENTER, 2504 A Whitis Ave Suspicious Person: A UT faculty member reported an unknown subject has been attending his lectures since the beginning of the semester. He does not believe that the unknown subject is a student at UT. The faculty member based this statement on the following facts: The unknown subject has not turned in any homework or tests; the subject arrives late and sits at the back of the classroom. During the investigation, the unknown subject was identified as a current UT subject. The student was asked not to return to the class unless he was enrolled to take the course. Occurred on: 4-18-07, at 3:25 PM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Burglary of Habitation: A Magnavox TV, Nintendo Wii, Apple laptop computer, Hewlett Packard laptop computer, Sony PS2, Apple iPod, and an Apple iPod 30 GB Video were stolen from an unsecured 7th floor dormitory room. The former owner left her room unsecured to run an errand off campus. Upon her return she discovered her property gone. Loss value: $4,148.00. Occurred on: 4-18-07, between 8:30 PM and 9:00 PM. 1900 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD. Theft / Criminal Trespass: Two UT police officers observed a subject attempting to ride a bicycle. The subject almost hit an unmarked police vehicle as he was attempting to maintain control of the bicycle. After regaining control of the bicycle, the subject waved at the officers as he rode past them. The officers observed several tools sticking out of the subject's rear pocket. The subject was stopped, and during the investigation, the subject stated he was on campus to look for a friend at a construction site. During the investigation, the officers learned that the subject had been issued several criminal trespass warnings and was arrested near the CMA complex for theft. The subject was taken into custody for Criminal Trespass and transported to Central Booking. During a search of the subject, officers discovered several Master keys, several pliers, and various bike locks. The bike was confiscated (see admin. message) and transported to UTPD. Occurred on: 4-18-07, at 2:11 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: I will state again, many of these bike thieves will return time and time again. Why? Because the University of Texas is a target-rich environment. This subject was arrested at CMA, after a staff member observed the subject steal bicycle parts from a bike parked at SSB last year. That staff member earned himself a free pizza through the Hungry for Justice Program. The staff member called UTPD and the police were able to locate the subject after he had cut several bicycle locks and was staging the bikes for his return. As for the UT cops, they will not be receiving a free pizza, but you can. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 46 alarm calls, 4 suspicious person calls, 2 suspicious activity calls, 1 lighting survey, and 5 unsecured buildings between 04-18-07 and 04-19-07. Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime. Your call may help solve or prevent a crime. Campus Watch comments should be directed to Officer Darrell Halstead at 512-232-9634 or Darrell.halstead@austin.utexas.edu .
