After receiving the requested items, the unknown subject turned and left the area. The unknown subject was described as: Asian male, 20 years of age, with short hair. GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS, 105 West 21st Street Theft / Criminal Trespass: A UT staff member observed a non-UT subject exit her 5th floor office. The staff member soon discovered her desk drawer was open and her wallet was missing from her purse. Another UT staff member began following the subject as he left the area. The staff member observed that the subject was carrying a wallet in his hand and began chasing him. The victim called her husband, who was outside the building, and told him about the theft. The husband observed the non-UT subject carrying his wife's wallet being chased by a UT staff member. He joined the chase. UT police officers arrived and detained the non-UT subject. During the investigation, the officers learned that the non-UT subject had attempted to throw the wallet away and missed the trash can. The wallet and contents were recovered. Job well done, Sir. 1900 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Criminal Trespass: A non-UT subject was discovered standing next to the open sliding door of a blue minivan. The non-UT subject had in his possession a silver Schwinn mountain bicycle. The officer observed a passenger inside the van hand the non-UT subject several one dollar bills. The non-UT subject took the money and got onto the mountain bicycle to ride away. The subject was stopped as he rode away. During the investigation, the subject stated the driver of the van had stopped him to offer him the money. As the investigation continued, the officer soon discovered that the subject had been issued several criminal trespass warnings for soliciting money at several locations on campus. The subject was taken into custody for Criminal Trespass and transported to Central Booking. The bicycle was impounded and taken to the University Police Building. Occurred on: 4-19-07, at 8:51 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: There are a number of individuals who are trying to make a difference in this world by helping the homeless. I applaud their efforts. I attended the UT / APD Student Safety Coalition meeting this afternoon. There was a very good suggestion that was made during this meeting when dealing with panhandling. Instead of handing the money over directly to a panhandler, send the money to one of the many different organizations that are equipped to handle this problem. By handing your money over to a panhandler, it might not be going for its intended purpose. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 55 alarm calls, 4 suspicious person calls, 2 suspicious activity calls, and 7 unsecured buildings between 04-19-07 and 04-20-07. Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime. Your call may help solve or prevent a crime. Campus Watch comments should be directed to Officer Darrell Halstead at 512-232-9634 or Darrell.halstead@austin.utexas.edu .
