The subject was initially unresponsive to officers' communication attempts but later stated that he wanted to go to jail. The subject appeared to go into and out of coherent conversation with the officers. Crime Prevention Tip of the Day: Each year a number of college students are involved in countless DWI collisions. Some of these collisions lead to fatalities. There are groups around this country that attempt to drive home a message about the importance of not driving after a night of drinking. Earlier today, UTPD assisted such a group. This group of young men have on a yearly basis re-enact a DWI collision. This year was no different. Earlier today a mock DWI collision occurred in the 2200 Block of Speedway. A silver sedan traveling south lost control and struck a pedestrian as well as a tree. A silver SUV could not stop in time to avoid striking the sedan. The driver and passenger of the SUV were hurt in the mock collision and were treated and transported to a local area hospital. The passenger of the silver sedan was also injured in the mock collision after failing to wear a seat belt and went through the front windshield. The mock intoxicated driver was able to exit his vehicle and walk around, finishing off his simulated beer, even though his head had hit the steering wheel. Austin EMS and the Austin Fire Department were also part of the mock collision and responded to the scene accordingly. A UTPD officer and police supervisor responded and conducted a mock DWI investigation. Three mock victims were transported to local area hospitals and the mock driver was arrested for DWI. The mock pedestrian that was hit by the mock sedan, died at the scene. This was only a staged DWI, but according to AFD and EMS it was a realistic re-enactment. Hats off to the Sigma Pi Fraternity International for a job well.
