Report for 05/15/2007

CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 05-11-07 and Tuesday, 05-15-07. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Theft: A UT student was observed placing "liberated" cafeteria food into an empty drink cup by a UT staff member. When confronted, the subject told the staff member that the cup contained a drink. The staff member asked him to pour the drink out, the student refused. The staff member discovered chicken and other food stuffs inside a dry drink cup. During the investigation, the student told the officer that he was trying to spend as little money as possible without going hungry. The student was referred to the Dean of Students at the request of the store manager. Loss value: $5.00 (recovered.) Occurred on: 5-10-07, at 9:17 PM. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 301 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass: A non-UT subject began following a UT student towards her dormitory. The student contacted the UT police department and provided the officers with a description of the subject. The officers located a non-UT subject matching the description near the dormitory. As the officers approached the subject, the subject asked the officers if they were going to "arrest him?" When asked why, the subject stated, because he had been following a girl and made her feel uncomfortable. As the investigation continued, the officer discovered that the subject had received several written criminal trespass warnings for the campus and surrounding area. The subject was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 5-13-07, at 3:30 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: This student did a GREAT JOB in contacting the police and providing a very detailed description (including his missing shoes.) Currently there are 135 Police Help call boxes located through campus, PRC and University Apartments. I will go out on a tree limb and stated that there are over 50,000 cellular telephones on campus. I bring this assumption up because a cellular telephone is by far your best crime prevention tool. As long as you can receive a signal, you can contact the Police, Fire Department and EMS from almost anywhere in the United States. 500 BLOCK COLORADO Assault with Bodily Injury / Public Intoxication: A UT staff member observed a male subject throw a female to the ground, then walk away Officers located a male subject pacing back and forth about a half block away. During the investigation, the officers learned that both subjects were in a dating relationship and had been in a prior altercation earlier in the evening. The officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the female's breath. The female requested to be allowed to drive home. The female was taken into custody for Public Intoxication. The non-UT male was taken into custody for Assault with Bodily Injury and both subjects were transported to Central Booking in separate vehicles. Neither subject was allowed to share the same holding cell. Occurred on: 5-12-07, at 3:20 AM. 1800 BLOCK SAN ANTONIO STREET Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor (4 Counts): A UT student was observed leaning out of the back of a truck displaying an extreme physical reaction to the overconsumption of alcohol. After the subject had several encore performances, the officer asked the subject to get out of the bed of the truck. The officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath along with the pungent aroma of digestive juices. The officer determined that the subject was under the legal age of 21. As the investigation continued, the officer soon discovered three additional students inside the truck had also been consuming alcohol and were under the legal age of 21. The officer issued all four subjects field release citations for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 5-11-07, at 2:30. 2500 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Driving While Intoxicated: A red Nissan SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed while committing additional traffic violations. The vehicle finally stopped on the west side of RLM. During the investigation, the officer observed that the driver's eyes were bloodshot and watery and the driver had a very strong odor of alcohol on his breath. The driver appeared to be confused as to why he was being stopped. The officer explained the different traffic violations the driver had committed. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the driver. During the tests the driver displayed enough clues that indicated that he was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. While the subject's vehicle was being impounded, the officers discovered a wide variety of cold beer inside the vehicle. Occurred on: 5-12-07, at 4:30 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 223 alarm calls, 7 suspicious persons calls, 5 medical calls, 4 collision reports, and 25 unsecured buildings between 05-11-07 and 05-15-07. Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime.
